Like many people this week, we were saddened to hear about the recent meningococcal cases reported in the news.

Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones and the communities affected.

As a care provider working closely with people in their own homes every day, we feel it’s important to share clear and reliable information when situations like this arise.

Meningococcal infection is rare, but it can develop quickly, so awareness of symptoms really matters. Early signs can include fever, severe headache, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion or unusual drowsiness. In some cases a rash may appear which does not fade when pressure is applied (often referred to as the “glass test”).

If symptoms like these develop, it’s important to seek medical advice urgently.

Within our own services we have taken the opportunity to remind staff about symptom awareness and the importance of not attending work if they feel unwell. We have also shared guidance with our teams as part of our normal infection prevention approach and ongoing monitoring of emerging health risks.

For further information, guidance from the NHS provides clear advice on symptoms and when to seek help.
