The Apprenticeship Levy has a new name. It is now called the Growth and Skills Levy. This is part of wider reforms to apprenticeship support and skills funding.

Broadly speaking, the Growth and Skills Levy is an additional 0.5% tax on employers with an annual payroll in excess of £3 million (less a £15,000 allowance). These companies then have access to their levy account to fund apprenticeship training (with some extra government support). If your payroll is below the £3 million annual threshold, you still get funding support for eligible apprenticeship training, but do not have to pay the levy.

Several important changes came into effect on 1st August 2026. In our latest blog we take a look at what support you can now get with apprenticeships: https://www.hrdept.co.uk/knowledge-hub/blog/what-help-can-you-get-with-apprenticeships

Employer harassment responsibilities are changing from October 30th.

Following on from measures for employers to take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent sexual harassment being introduced in 2024, employers must now take ‘all reasonable steps’, whilst also being directly liable for third-party harassment.

Training, risk assessments and updating of policies and procedures will all play an important role to ensure you are meeting your obligations and keeping your employees safe.

On 30th October, the law regarding sexual harassment in workplaces is strengthened to require employers to take “ALL reasonable steps” (rather than just “reasonable steps”) to prevent sexual harassment. It will also increase in scope to include harassment by third parties.

We have been flagging this change for months, so hopefully regular readers are well informed. But a recent survey by Acas found that about 40% of employers were still unaware of the changes. So if you know any businesses that are in this situation, please do share this with them.

In our latest blog, we discuss new the harassment law changes along with the actions employers need to take to ensure they are ready and compliant ahead of 30th october: https://www.hrdept.co.uk/knowledge-hub/blog/taking-all-reasonable-steps-to-prevent-sexual-harassment
