If you work in construction, make sure your CV gives some context to your experience.

Include the types of projects you’ve worked on, not just company names. Mention the value or scale of projects where relevant. Be clear about your responsibilities, the trades or teams you’ve worked alongside, and any additional tickets, qualifications or machinery experience you hold.

And if you’ve progressed from one level of responsibility to another, make that obvious too 📈

A recruiter should be able to look at your CV and quickly understand where you’d fit on their client’s site.

If you already know the new year will bring new projects, increased workload or a gap in your engineering or construction team, October gives you something valuable: time.

⏰ Time to define what you actually need.
⏰ Time to reach people who aren’t actively applying.
⏰ Time to have meaningful conversations.
⏰ And time to avoid making a rushed hire because a project has already started.

Spend some of it researching the operation you’re potentially joining 🔍

Find out what they manufacture or maintain. Understand their customers and sectors. Look at the equipment and processes they use. Read up on recent investment. Then think about where your own experience connects.

It gives you better questions to ask and, more importantly, helps you talk about your experience in a way that’s relevant to their environment.

It doesn’t tell us you reduced downtime, improved a process, commissioned new machinery or became the person everyone calls when a particular fault appears ⚙️

That’s the experience employers want to hear about 🗣️

When updating your engineering CV this autumn, look beyond your day-to-day duties and add examples of the problems you’ve actually solved.

Specific examples make your experience far easier for a hiring manager to understand and remember 💡

Years on the job tell you how long somebody has worked. They don’t necessarily tell you what they can do 👀

Someone with five years of highly relevant project experience could be a stronger fit than somebody with twice as long in a completely different environment.

➡️ What have they built, maintained or delivered?
➡️ What equipment and systems do they know?
➡️ What problems have they solved?
➡️ How has their responsibility grown?
➡️ And, crucially, how relevant is that experience to the job you actually need doing?

For employers, it’s a reminder not to make “X years required” the whole recruitment strategy.

For candidates, it’s why the detail behind your experience matters.

The latest S&P Global UK Construction PMI for August remained below the 50.0 mark that separates growth from contraction. However, civil engineering returned to growth and commercial construction was broadly stable, while housebuilding continued to struggle.

That distinction matters here in the North East, where major infrastructure, energy and regeneration projects continue to shape the skills the region needs.

Engineering is a broad industry, and the skills that make one candidate stand out can look very different from one vacancy to the next ⚙️

Across technical and manufacturing environments, experience such as electrical and mechanical fault finding, PLCs and automation, CNC, CAD/design, maintenance and project delivery can all strengthen a candidate’s position.

But here’s the bit people sometimes miss: having the experience isn’t enough if an employer can’t see it.

Be specific on your CV. Name the machinery, systems and software you’ve used. Explain the faults you diagnose, the projects you’ve delivered and the responsibility you hold.

Make it easy for an employer to understand what you can actually do. ⚙️

October will be here before we know it, and the last few months of the year can put plenty of pressure on a construction programme 🍂

Projects change phases. Labour requirements move with them. Deadlines get closer. And waiting until a gap appears on site to start recruiting can leave you playing catch-up.

👉 September is a good point to look ahead and ask:
Who are we going to need in October, November and December?
