It’s World Youth Skilly Day 2022

Having the opportunity to work with young people is an amazing experience. I’ve encountered students who are capable of laying bricks to a level I’d be happy to have them build my house with. In the past, I have witnessed teenagers disassembling engines and reassembling them effortlessly. I have seen student artwork that takes your breath away. There are teenagers who are making more money than teachers by using social media platforms and applications to offer creative services and charging a pretty penny for it. Sadly, schools often focus too much on academic progress like SATs and GCSEs, so World Youth Skills Day July 15th 2022 is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate these skills. Some of these skills cannot be measured academically, and students who may not flourish in academic exams definitely don’t receive the credit they deserve.

My tutor time or starter activities often include reminding students of one of my favorite entrepreneurs growing up, Chris Dawson, owner of the highly successful and profitable chain superstore, The Range. “Dawson attended school irregularly, struggled with dyslexia, and left at 15 years old with few qualifications.” While Chris cannot read or write, he is amazing with numbers. He is a born salesman with a likable character and an amazing ability to sell. For someone who dropped out of school and was unable to read and write, his current net worth is £2.05 billion, not bad?

Who is your favourite entreprenuer and what skills do they have?

Don't Step On a Bee Day! 🐝 Is a great opportunity to spend time with our children out in our communities on Sunday 11 July talking about nature and bees. During school today, look for insects during break or lunchtime, and take part in other activities that will help raise awareness. It may surprise students that bees are such an integral part of our existence as human beeings (sorry, couldn't resist 🤣). As bees pollinate flowers, you can take photos of them and share them on your school's social media. "As long as you don't disturb them and give them some space, bees will pretty much leave you alone. They're even less interested in stinging you than you are in being stung, after all."

Footprint Education is supporting ‘Talk To Us 2022’

Samaritans provide vital support to people in need, the service handles a concerning volume of calls every day, their website states “Every 90 minutes, someone in the UK or Ireland takes their own life. In the next hour, we will respond to almost 400 calls for help.” Our children and pupils can sometimes have a difficult time communicating, just as we do as adults. As the Samaritans do rely on donations to provide their great services, you could also consider raising some money to help. Footprint Education is supporting ‘Talk To Us 2022’ and so can you, this topic can be used for tutor time or conversation starters. If your school would like to get involved with a fundraiser activity and donate, please follow this link https://www.samaritans.org/support-us/why-we-need-your-help/

“Samaritans are challenging the UK to become better listeners by sharing expert tips on how to be a better listener. Throughout July, Samaritans branches are also holding events throughout the UK and Ireland to raise awareness of the services they offer in their local communities. Visit your local branch website to see what they’re doing during Talk To Us.”

If your school would like to support this campaign, there are lots of banners to share on your social media pages, please follow this link https://www.samaritans.org/support-us/campaign/talk-us/toolkit/

“What if I’m under 18?

You can still get in touch with us. We’re here for you, whatever your age. Our first responsibility is to you, not your parents or guardian.

You can talk to us about whatever is on your mind, we’ll listen. This might include how you look, problems at school or college, how people are treating you, and worries about exams or money.”

Various communication methods are available, including e-mail, letters, online chat, and telephone calls, check out this link for contact details. https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/contact-samaritan/

Footprint Education is taking the challenge!

“Plastic Free July® is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. Will you be part of Plastic Free July by choosing to refuse single-use plastics?” (plasticfreejuly.org) Footprint Education is taking the challenge!

Footprint education is aiming high and taking the challenge of going completely plastic free for July, that’s right, no plastic single use bottles of water, we will drink from the tap or use glass bottles, no pens for writing, we will use pencils or our computers and use e-signatures for any documents that need to be signed. We are also bringing our breakfast and lunch from home that can be washed afterwards, so we are saying no to cling film! Carrier bags are out, rucksacks are in!

One of our main focuses will be single-use takeaway cups. Here are a few tips to follow…

“What you can do

Choose to refuse single-use takeaway cups

How can you do it

You can easily avoid takeaway coffee cups by bringing along your own reusable alternative. There are many reusable coffee cups available on the market. Keep it in your bag or on your desk at work; wherever you’ll remember to use it.

Many people choose socially and environmentally-friendly reusables made of ceramic, glass, plastic or stainless steel.

You don’t even need to purchase a special cup. You can bring a mug or jar from home – just be conscious of using items that can heat up or don’t travel well if you’re going far.

If you forget your reusable alternative and don’t have time to dine-in, consider going without. It might not be easy, but will probably mean you never forget again!

Taking the next steps

Spread the word about reusable coffee cups with your friends, family members and colleagues, especially if you go out for coffee runs with them.

You can also encourage and support cafes to become a part of the Responsible Cafe network.

The impact

Coffee cups are not recyclable in most locations. Even ‘compostable’ cups are rarely composted as they require very specific facilities and conditions
Bringing your own cup shows others how easy it is to reduce their waste and creates a new trend”
