There are times in farming when life changes in an instant. A serious accident. A life-changing injury. Or sometimes, the unimaginable, a death.

And whilst families, friends and communities are trying to come to terms with what has happened, the cows still need milking. The calves still need feeding. The farm still needs running. Thatā€™s when we get the call. Not to replace the person. We never could. But, to help carry the load when someone else simply canā€™t. Walking onto a farm after a tragedy hits different. Youā€™re not just taking over a milking routine. Youā€™re stepping into someoneā€™s life at the moment everything has changed.

Thereā€™s uncertainty. Thereā€™s shock. Thereā€™s grief. And thereā€™s a herd that still needs care. Our job is to pick up the reins. To bring some stability. To give the family one less thing to worry about. To make sure the cows are cared for while the people who matter most have time to deal with what has happened.

Because behind every herd is a person. People think our job is about the cows but in reality ā€œ ā€

Some of the best moments in this job donā€™t come from the big winsā€¦ they come from the small ones šŸ„šŸ’›
Last time I was on this farm, this little calf was struggling. Weak, not thriving, the kind that makes you keep checking the pen that bit more often. So I did what we all do ā€” gave him that extra time, patience, and care he needed.
Fast forward to todayā€¦ Iā€™m back for holiday cover, and look at him now šŸ‘‡
Thriving. Strong. Full of life.
Thatā€™s the thing about good stockmanship ā€” itā€™s not just about getting the job done, itā€™s about the difference you leave behind when you walk away.
This is why I love what I do.
Because sometimes, you come back and get to see the story continue.
