Judgement is reserved for the new year. What do you think the outcome will be?

The fight for gender equality has come a long way in recent years, and although there is still a lot to work towards, it's important to celebrate the milestones. 100 years ago Carrie Morrison became the first woman to qualify as a solicitor in England on 18th December 1922.

Following the S*x Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919, which permitted women to train as solicitors, Carrie was sponsored through her studies to become a qualified lawyer. After working as a 'poor mans lawyer' taking pro bono cases in London's East End, she opened a practice alongside her husband that is now part of BDB Pitmans.

With class divide and social mobility dominating an increasing number of conversations, Britain's institutions are coming under scrutiny for the country's elitist reputation.

Where does the legal industry fit into this?

According to the Social Mobility Foundation’s annual employer index, law firms are excelling. More than half of the top 75 index, measuring the effort companies are making to create a more inclusive environment, are occupied by law firms, including first, which goes to Browne Jacobson.

The criminal legal aid sector has been declining for years and Raab’s decision to cut funding a further 15% will make this work, according to The Law Society.

Despite recommendations by the Independent Review of Criminal Legal Aid to restructure and increase renumeration for criminal legal aid workers, Raab has rejected their proposal. Legal representation and, therefore, access to justice, are fundamental rights within the justice system, and this failing may create barriers to this.

Experts are concerned about the financial viability of the criminal justice system, as fewer firms and individuals participate due to the lack of compensation.

What does this mean for the future?

Despite the global economic issues this year, the UK legal sector has seen unprecedented growth. According The Law Society Gazette, revenue has increased 12.5%, with a total of £41bn income. Within this, the legal technology market was a standout, growing to $15.9bn globally.

Of the top 100 firms, the top 25 were responsible for 80% of their revenue, demonstrating the power of large firms. This leads some to ask, what can smaller firms to do to bridge this income gap?

Although the UK has maintained its status as a global leader in the sector, experts warn firms not to get complacent. The global economic issues are not yet over, and they will need to continue innovation to further cements its position.

When you qualify as a Lawyer, you may expect to only be able to work in that location. However, there are some growing legal markets that are actively seeking talented law professionals who gained their skills elsewhere.

In Singapore, there is a strong demand for Lawyers in many practice areas, including M&A, banking and finance, energy and international arbitration. Increasingly, language requirements to work here are being relaxed.

Just in the past 18 months alone, five major law firms have opened offices in Singapore. With Magic Circle and US law firms having successful bases in the city-state, salaries can be high.

Singapore has become a major industry hub within the South East Asia region and its GDP is expected to rise 4% throughout 2022.

Would you ever consider taking your legal career to Singapore? Comment why below.
