**10 Seconds to Improve your CV!!**

We invest so much time writing our CV to ensure that it showcases our skills and experience in the very best way.
This is so important as your CV is your personal sales document, your chance to attract recruiters.
BUT.....did you know that recruiters, on average, take just a few seconds to scan your CV and decide whether or not to continue reading? You have to make that great first impression or they won't even read the good stuff.

* Get the length right. Generally, the best CVs are a maximum of 2 pages. If much longer, the recruiter may get bored.

** Your layout should be clear and well-spaced - use columns, sections and a clean format. Keep it simple!

*** Write a snappy personal statement at the top of the first page, a couple of short paragraphs is ideal, using bullet points to highlight your best skills and biggest achievements.

Is your CV too unfocused, with no clear career direction?

I recently worked with a client who had studied engineering but switched professions and taken up other roles. When he came to apply again for engineering roles, his CV was rejected by recruiters! He came to me for help.

His CV was too muddled, with several different roles that showed no career path or clarity. The recruiter could not see what role he wanted and where his motivation lay.

With some smart formatting and professional rewriting, I created a CV that shows a clear and targeted career direction meaning that he can now apply for engineering roles with confidence.

**How to use quantifiers in your CV**
I talk a lot about the need to add SPECIFICS to your CV for it to get noticed by recruiters. By this I mean, not using vague language and listing boring job duties but focusing on your specific achievements.
A great way to take this further is to use quantifiers such as $, £, % etc.
It doesn’t have to be complicated, you can use simple examples such as:
I was responsible for chasing overdue accounts worth £50k plus
I improved customer retention by 32%

Statements like these catch the recruiters’ eye so much more effectively! And also show that you understand the detail in your previous roles.

Experience or qualifications first on my CV?

This is a common question and my advice is – it depends!

Generally speaking, if you have at least one year of solid experience in your profession, better to list your experience before your qualifications as it shows recruiters that you are applying your skills to a role in practice.

However, if you are a new graduate or want to change career and have good qualifications in your chosen profession, list your qualifications before your experience.
BUT be sure to be specific – list areas of study or modules that are linked to future job roles, internships, dissertation or presentation topics. Show that you know your stuff although you haven’t got much actual job experience.

This is a question I get asked a lot – how to make your CV stand out to recruiters when you don’t have much work experience related to the role you are applying for.

Perhaps you are changing career or you are a recent graduate without much experience in the profession that you studied.

Here are my top tips to get your CV noticed by the recruiter 😀

There’s a lot of confusion out there about cover letters. What purpose they serve, how they differ from your CV in terms of what information to include and even how necessary or valuable they are in your job search.

And while opinion naturally differs about what a standout cover letter should look like, there’s no denying their importance to each of your job applications! It’s my view that your CV is the most critical document, the most potent weapon in your job search armour, as it’s the one thing that nine out of ten recruiters will gravitate towards first – it gives them a 30 second snapshot of your skills, experience and strengths. It determines whether or not they want to delve further and keep reading. The recruiter probably won’t even make it as far as reading your cover letter if your CV isn’t up to scratch.

But your cover letter MUST be up to the same standard as your CV, or your hard work on creating an eye-catching job application could be in vain.

Here are my top tips for writing a cover letter that gets noticed.

How can you get ahead in your job search during the current COVID pandemic?

If you made it one of your new year’s resolutions to look for a new job in 2020, it’s hardly surprising if things haven’t quite worked out as you planned! The COVID pandemic has hit world economies hard, reducing demand in many industries and leaving companies reluctant at best, and unable at worst, to recruit new staff.

In every crisis, though, there are opportunities. Jobs DO still exist, vacancies ARE out there in the jobs market. You just need to adapt your strategy a little to give yourself the best possible chance of landing that all-important interview.

Which leads me to some top tips for getting ahead in your job search during the current situation.
