📱 A GIF sent to a colleague might seem like a harmless joke, but could it really lead to a harassment claim worth nearly £14,000?

In a recent Employment Tribunal case, a security guard was awarded just under £14,000 following an incident involving a GIF sent by a colleague, amongst other matters.

Associate Solicitor, Kallum discusses the case and why messages sent through platforms such as Teams or WhatsApp shouldn’t always be treated as harmless workplace banter. ⚖️

When something is meant as a joke, does that automatically make it acceptable? The Tribunal’s approach to cases like this may surprise you. 🤔

Watch in full as Kallum explains what can be considered when deciding whether a workplace interaction crosses the line into harassment.

🚑 Imagine working for the NHS for 26 years, only to be dismissed because of a shocking crime committed by your wife.

That’s exactly what happened to one ambulance worker after her wife attacked their manager with a hammer and was later convicted of attempted murder.

The employee herself wasn’t charged and the police took no further action against her. But the NHS still decided to dismiss her, citing concerns around trust, confidence and the organisation’s reputation. ⚖️

So, could an employer fairly dismiss someone because of the actions of their spouse?
Managing Director, Anita Kalra takes us through the case, the NHS’s reasoning and what happened when the dismissal was challenged at an Employment Tribunal.

What would you have done in the NHS’s position? Watch in full and let us know in the comments below. 👇🏻

🤔 Could asking a woman why she wants to work really amount to sexual harassment?

A sales assistant was questioned by her employer about why she wanted to work, why she wanted to earn money and even about her husband.

They might sound like simple questions, but an Employment Tribunal was asked to consider whether there was more behind them. ⚖️

Trainee Solicitor, Suraj discusses the case, what the judge ultimately found, whether the questions amounted to harassment and the compensation awarded to the employee as a result. 💷

Watch in full to find out what the Tribunal decided, and let us know what you think in the comments below. 👇🏻

💷 Your settlement agreement includes a compensation payment. Does that mean it’s all tax-free?

Not necessarily. 🤔

One of the biggest misconceptions around settlement agreements is that the entire payment will automatically be tax-free.

Solicitor, Ravneet explains why it’s important to look beyond the headline figure and understand how different parts of a settlement payment may be treated for tax purposes. 📝

Two employees could have settlement agreements for exactly the same amount, yet ultimately receive different amounts in their bank accounts. It all comes down to how the payment is structured.

Have you ever assumed a settlement payment would be completely tax-free? Let us know in the comments below. 👇🏻

📱 Filming your own dismissal and posting it online... surely that’s your choice?

Not necessarily.

Solicitor, Ravneet discusses why recording or sharing a workplace meeting could have consequences, even when it’s posted from your own personal social media account.

From what was recorded to why it was filmed and how it was later used, there can be much more for an Employment Tribunal to consider. ⚖️

So where should the line be drawn?

Should employees be allowed to record meetings and dismissals, or should employers have the right to prevent it? 🎥

We’ve all heard the saying, “the customer is always right”... but how far should an employer actually take that? 🤔

In a recent case, a car sales manager was dismissed after stepping in when a customer was reportedly behaving aggressively towards a member of staff. He later went on to win £21,000 at an Employment Tribunal.

Associate Solicitor, Kallum looks at what happened and why employers need to think carefully about how they respond when the problem comes from a customer rather than an employee. ⚖️

Keeping customers happy is important, but so is protecting the people who work for you.

Would you expect your employer to back you in this situation, even if it meant losing a customer? 💬

Could calling a colleague “auntie” really end up at an Employment Tribunal? 🤔

It sounds harmless, especially when the term is considered respectful in some cultures. But one NHS workplace dispute shows why context and personal boundaries matter.

Managing Director, Anita Kalra discusses the case of a 61-year-old employee who repeatedly asked a colleague to stop calling her “auntie” and what happened when the issue continued.

The case eventually reached the Employment Tribunal, but what did it decide and was she entitled to compensation? ⚖️

What do you think? If a term is considered respectful in your culture, should you still stop using it when a colleague asks you to? 💬
