Learn from your mistakes, I tell my kids, which begs the question: What on Earth am I doing heading to Geneva to embark on Le Cure … again? I did – 400km of cycling up 10,000+ metres of some of the highest mountains in the Alps – two years ago (as a novice Mamil), and it nearly finished me off.
Well, the main reason is that it’s for a brilliant cause: the money Le Cure - www.lecure.org - raises goes directly to the cancer research team at the Royal Marsden. Previously, its funded the development of their ground-breaking ‘liquid biopsy’, a sort of super-easy, low-cost, self-service early radar system to detect cancers months – even years – before any symptoms.
The other - personal – reason is that I was hoping to do it properly this time. Hence the detailed training plan I drew up in January with myriad milestones, FTP benchmarks and heart rate zones. How’s that going? Not so good. January became May. Then in June I tore my calf. I did manage a few weeks of training in July but … then went down with a virus.
So, in lieu of being actually prepared to do all this cycling, I need encouragement, which basically comes in the form of money. From you. If you can (and I know times have been difficult) please do donate here. https://sportsgiving.co.uk/sponsorship/entry/1240996
All the money raised by goes directly to the research. Not a penny is wasted on admin or overheads.
