We not totally sure what inspired this week's question...

Maybe we were just hungry. 🍰

We asked the team for their favourite desserts.

As usual, a wide range of answers, but one thing we all agreed on is there's a lot of good choice out there.

What's your favourite? Drop it in the comments below. 👇🍨

Should I work for a main contractor or a subcontractor?

Is a question we hear regularly from M&E professionals once they've got a bit of experience under their belt.

And depending on who you ask, you'll probably get a completely different answer.

💰 Better salaries.
🏗️ Bigger projects.
📈 Faster progression.
🔧 More hands-on involvement.
👥 More structure and support.

There are strong arguments on both sides.

So for our latest Streamline Insight, we explored some of the biggest differences between the two and emphasise the importance reviewing which environment suits you best.

Worth a read if you're considering your next move. 👇

Reputation is somehow still underrated in recruitment.

There are certain businesses where candidates instantly say:
“Yeah, I’ve heard good things about them.”

And that goodwill can genuinely make the difference when salaries, benefits and opportunities are all relatively close together.

This is a topic we discussed mainly from a logistics perspective in this video, but honestly, it applies just as much across MEP construction as well.

The interesting part is how those reputations are actually built. Usually not through flashy branding or big statements, but the smaller things. The atmosphere in the office, how people speak to each other, whether the staff actually seem happy to be there.

Because people talk, especially in tight industries where word travels quickly.

Watch as the team discuss how company reputation is often built long before someone ever applies.

Hello, is anybody out there?

One of the quickest ways to kill momentum in a recruitment process is simple… silence.

Candidates don’t expect instant replies every hour of the day. Most people are understanding when things are busy.

But if we're seeing interview times on hold, updates disappearing and ultimately communication dropping out, good candidates will check out pretty quickly.

And more often than not, another offer appears before the process even gets going properly.

A bit of clarity is so underrated.

We touched on this and four other habits that damage recruitment relationships in our latest blog. Follow the link below to read. 🔗👇

If you’re a smaller M&E contractor, most candidates understand you probably can’t match the salaries of the absolute top dogs in the market.

But there still has to be a level of realism, you can't be offering £20k off the mark...

Where smaller businesses can really compete though is everything around the salary.

A clearer progression path, more responsibility earlier, a tighter-knit culture, direct access to leadership. We could go on for a while.

The key is being honest about that in the interview process and giving candidates reassurance about where they fit into the long-term plan.

Because you'll find as Kyle Francis says here, a lot of top candidates are looking for that smaller business to truly grow alongside.

Watch as he and Tom Evans discuss why smaller contractors can still attract top talent without necessarily being the highest payer in the market. 👇

Our Streamliner of the Month for April is Denise Roberts! 🏆

Denise has now been with Streamline for an incredible 20 years and continues to be one of the most valued people in the business.

Nothing is ever too much trouble for Den. Whether it’s helping the team behind the scenes, keeping everything running smoothly or supporting people whenever they need it, she does it all without fuss and always with a smile.

The kind of person every office hopes to have.

We're glad to see the wheel was good to her as she won the £250 experience voucher as her prize for another brilliant month.

Well done Denise! 👏

We're strong believers that top recruitment partnerships aren't built over email.

If you want us as your recruiter to suitably understand your business, your goals and what you’re looking for, there’s no substitute for a face to face conversation.

So when we hear that's what you're up for as well, we know the future is bright.

Time = Money.

One thing we’re hearing more and more from both MEP Construction and Logistics candidates is that people want time back, not always just more money.

Flexibility has become a huge part of the conversation. And it's not always around fully remote working or endless extra holidays, but the smaller things that make day-to-day life easier.

Leaving a bit earlier for a doctor’s appointment, helping with school pick-ups or simply feeling like the company has your back when life happens.

The challenge of course is balancing that fairly across a business, especially as companies grow. But we believe that this should be a challenge your business should be up to facing.

Watch as the team discuss how flexibility expectations are sometimes the difference between a yes and a no. 👇

And stick around to the end to hear our company stance on ‘duvet days’... 😅

One of the biggest strains on quality recruitment processes is vague feedback.

“Not the right fit” after multiple interview stages will leave everyone back at square one.

From us, the more detail we get, the more we can adjust the search, improve the shortlist and avoid repeating the same process again with the next round of candidates.

And for the candidate, it allows them to understand where they stand rather than being left replaying events trying work out where they went wrong.

And those experiences do travel. People talk, reputations spread and processes get remembered.

As always, top communication and honesty prevails.

We touched on this and four other key poor hiring habits in our latest blog, read via the link below. 👇
