We are seeking a Mine Engineering Expert (managerial level) for our client who provides risk management services to the mining industry. This is a great opportunity to travel the world visiting many mine sites to conduct due diligence. We are looking for someone with the following experience:

• Degree in mining engineering
• Must be a UK citizen or have the right to work and live in the UK.
• 15-20 years of operational experience as a minimum
• Geotechnical experience – both UG and OP experience in hard rock.
• Strong communication, written, and reporting skills
• Ability to read, analyse and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations.
• Someone who is well travelled and enjoys travelling overseas.
• Must be based out of the UK
• Excellent base salary with additional benefits

Consider this scenario…

You are a hiring manager with an extensive network and you’ve been attempting to leverage it to identify suitable candidates and to make your job opportunity known. After several months of fruitless efforts, you decide to enlist our services.

The initial step in any of our projects is to comprehensively map the market. We identify potential candidates who could meet the specific skill and experience criteria. Once we compile a lengthy list, we present it to you and ask you to eliminate individuals already contacted or ruled out – those within your network.

Ultimately, it turned out that only 7% of the candidates on the long list were individuals already in your network. At first glance, this may seem like a modest proportion, and indeed, it is.

However, it's vital to consider the broader context. The global mining industry is exceptionally vast, with hundreds of thousands of professionals engaged within it. Therefore, knowing 7% of this colossal number equates to having a substantial network.

Nevertheless, relying solely on your network for recruitment means neglecting the remaining 93% of the industry. It's worth noting that these percentages can fluctuate significantly. In certain specialised niches and services, it may indeed be possible to have connections with a more extensive portion of the industry.

Nonetheless, in most cases, exclusively utilising only your network is turning your back on a vast sea of untapped talent. This is precisely why people engage our services: to access that untapped 93% of the market.

It’s getting harder to find the mining engineers a green world needs…

The skills shortage is something we echo a lot and we recently heard a number of shocking statistics to back this up that we needed to share:

🔹In Australia alone the mining industry has more jobs to fill right now than at any time in its recorded history.

🔸The US has 36,000 jobs to fill this year up from 24,000 a year ago from a survey from EY.

🔹 There has been around a 63% drop in mining engineering enrollment in Australia since 2014 according to a recent McKinsey study.

🔸 There has been a 39% drop in mining graduations in the United States since 2016.

🔹Research shows that almost ½ the current mining engineers will retire in the next 10 years which leaves a big gap if they aren’t being replaced.

We know the world needs mining to achieve its net zero goals but it faces a worrying shortage of young workers needed to get materials out of the ground that go into power grids and electric cars that are crucial to the energy transition.
