Climeworks' Mammoth plant in Iceland, the world’s largest direct air capture facility, began operating on May 8, 2024. “Mammoth” is the second commercial direct air capture plant opened by Swiss company Climeworks in the country, and is 10 times bigger than its predecessor, Orca, which started running in 2021.

This plant can capture 36,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, with the carbon sequestered underground and turned into stone, powered by Iceland’s geothermal energy. Climeworks aims to reduce costs significantly by 2050, with plans to expand to 1 million tons of carbon removal per year by 2030 and 1 billion tons by 2050.

Ministers from the G7 countries have agreed to end the use of unabated coal power plants by 2035, aiming to curb global greenhouse gas emissions. This milestone agreement, reached after talks in Turin, Italy, is significant as it sets a target for phasing out coal for the first time.

However, the agreement allows leeway for countries heavily reliant on coal by permitting the use of carbon-capture technology and offering flexibility in timelines. Despite this progress, experts warn that 6% of the world's coal capacity must shut down annually until 2040 to avoid a climate emergency.

Equinix (EQIX) has formed a $600 million joint venture with PGIM Real Estate to develop and operate the first xScale data center in the United States, located in Silicon Valley. The facility, named SV12x, is expected to provide over 28 MW of power capacity upon completion of its two phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion in the second quarter of the current year.

The collaboration will significantly expand Equinix's xScale data center portfolio, reaching a total value exceeding $8 billion across more than 35 facilities worldwide.
