The best interviews are a proper two-way conversation.

Of course, you need to be prepared to talk about your experience, but you should also come away with plenty of answers, and not because asking a clever question at the end makes you look good.

You need to understand the projects you’d be joining, where they are in their lifecycle, what else is in the pipeline, where the business is heading and what that could mean for your career.

That’s especially important in power and energy, where two roles with very similar job descriptions can turn out to be very different opportunities.

The point of an interview is for both sides to work that out. We’ve pulled together some of the questions we think are worth asking, and the research worth doing before you get there.

"Building a UK team from scratch is one challenge. Doing it while mobilising two major HVDC cable projects, in a market where the people you need are in very limited supply, is another.

David Mahoney and the team worked closely with a leading EHV cable manufacturer as they built their UK capability across project delivery, controls, planning, HSSEQ, commercial and tendering.

So far, that’s meant nine senior appointments, with 90% of the roles filled.

The work has gone further than finding the right people with HVDC or HV cable experience. David has also worked closely with the client on how roles are defined, how candidates are assessed and how hiring decisions are made, effectively becoming an extension of their team. Then the team at Turner Lovell have used our experience and network to identify, approach and convince candidates to join a shortlist.

Nine hires are a good result. The bigger story is what we were brought in to help build.

Since November, we’ve been supporting a leading global EHV cable manufacturer as it expands in the UK following major project awards.
It needed leadership for two major project teams, a UK EPC structure, project controls and planning capability, and a tendering function to support what came next.

It needed people with direct cable-sector experience - in a market where that experience is already in very short supply.

In this time, we have filled 90% of the roles assigned to us, with shortlists typically delivered within two weeks and 100% retention to date.
