Are job titles losing meaning? What candidates really care about now.

Once upon a time, titles like โ€œManager,โ€ โ€œExecutive,โ€ or โ€œHead of Xโ€ carried clear weight. But today? Not so much.

In 2025, candidates are looking past the job title and asking deeper questions:

Whatโ€™s the actual scope of the role?

Will I be trusted to make decisions?

What does growth really look like here?

Who will I be learning from?

Is this a stepping stone or a dead end?

Iโ€™ve seen brilliant candidates walk away from a flashy title because the role lacked autonomyโ€”or because the culture didnโ€™t align.

Iโ€™ve also seen people say yes to roles with humble titles because the mission, mentorship, or flexibility was exactly what they needed.

So hereโ€™s my take:

Titles are starting to feel more like a starting point for conversationโ€”not a selling point.

As recruiters, we need to go deeper. Paint the full picture. And help hiring managers understand what truly matters to top talent.
