After promising results in animal studies including research in sheep, human trials for the world’s first bionic eye are scheduled to begin in Melbourne, which could revolutionise treatment options for blindness.

This innovative technology designed to restore vision in those who have lost it was created by scientists at Monash University in Australia. The ‘Gennaris Bionic Vision System’ bypasses damaged optic nerves and sends signals directly to the brain’s visual cortex.

Though sheep are rarely used in research, they can serve as really useful models for particular areas of biomedicine, particularly as models for endocrinology, reproduction, pregnancy and foetal development. They’re also helpful in studying neurodegenerative disorders, as their brains are more similar to humans than smaller mammals like rodents.

A groundbreaking stem cell procedure has reversed Type 1 diabetes in a woman in China, marking a major medical milestone:

Researchers used the woman’s own cells, reprogramming them into insulin-producing stem cells.

As a result, she began producing insulin naturally for the first time since developing the condition. This breakthrough offers new hope for millions with Type 1 diabetes, who currently depend on insulin therapy to manage their blood sugar levels.

The study involved three patients with Type 1 diabetes. Scientists extracted cells from each patient, converted them into stem cells capable of transforming into any cell type, and chemically reprogrammed them into insulin-producing cells.

These newly created cells were then placed inside the patients’ stomachs, where they began producing insulin. While it’s early days, the success with the first patient suggests a future where Type 1 diabetics may no longer need insulin injections to survive.

O programa de voluntariado do Centro Nacional de Reprodução de Lince Ibérico (CNRLI), em Silves, encontra-se novamente aberto e contempla quatro (4) vagas para uma posição de voluntariado integrada na equipa de etologia e videovigilância do centro, com a duração mínima de 3 meses, de março a maio de 2023.

O voluntariado decorre na área de Etologia e Comportamento Animal e todos os voluntários terão formação neste campo, adaptado ao funcionamento e animais do CNRLI.

Procuramos pessoas motivadas e, idealmente, com formação nas áreas de ciências naturais, para esta importante fase de época de cria, marcado pelo seguimento das fêmeas durante os partos e pelo período neonatal das crias recém-nascidas.

Nesta altura é possível decorrerem, ainda, alguns cios e cópulas, com seguimento do interessante leque comportamental que existe nas interações sociais entre estes felinos.

O alojamento durante este período será feito, gratuitamente, nas instalações do CNRLI, com possibilidade de receber subsídio de alimentação de 4.27€ por cada dia trabalhado, para cidadãos da União Europeia.

👉 We are seeking motivated people with a background in the Natural Sciences field and high interest in volunteering.

The Centre is located in Silves, Algarve, Portugal, and the volunteers will integrate the ethology and video surveillance team of the CNRLI, within the field of Ethology and Animal Behaviour and will have specialized training and lectures on this subject.
