ICE Early Careers Network London

ICE Early Careers Network London We represent the next generation of civil engineers in London who are designing and building cities and infrastructure for the future.

There are around 4,000 graduate and student members in the London Region, more than half of our regional membership. ICE London’s Graduates and Students (G&S) Committee is made up of keen volunteers from this group of 4,000 members. We organise events, courses, competitions and socials, helping members develop their careers, providing support and allowing like-minded people to meet and socialise.

The committee aims to help all G&S members - and in doing so, ourselves - to be better engineers. If you are a graduate or student member with a postal address within the area governed by the Greater London Authority, then you are encouraged to join the ICE London G&S Committee. It’s only by becoming an active member that you’ll realise the benefits of being a member of the institution. Our activities fit broadly within three strands:
Membership - which focuses on bringing new members into the institution, helping them discover the benefits of joining and providing opportunities for members to meet each other;
Knowledge - providing training opportunities for our members; and Public Voice - keeping everyone inside and beyond the institution informed of our activities.

🔗CHAIN 2024 - Beyond Boundaries - Cross Disciplinary Engineering in Tech and AI’ - Event Summary🔗

On 25th July, the ICE Early Careers Network London had the honour of being part of the committee organising CHAIN 24 ‘Beyond Boundaries’ - ‘Cross Disciplinary Engineering in Tech and AI’. The event was hosted at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Savoy Place and brought together industry experts, representatives from different institutions and young engineers to network and hear more about this exciting topic!

The day started with introductions from the different institutions, with Francesca Golding, our External Institution Ambassador, speaking about the ICE Early Careers Network.

We then heard talks from across different sectors and industries, learning more about the potential of AI and technology in Engineering. From using AI to optimise signalling in rail networks, filtering through large amounts of data to produce reports, to the use of smart robots for remote inspection in the nuclear industry and even assisting in the search for signs of life in our solar system. The possibilities for applications within Engineering are fascinating!

We also learned about the challenges we face with AI, including integrating AI into existing industries, building trust with the end user, and avoiding bias with data sets. Another key point raised was how we will meet the increasing energy needs required to run the data centres that power new tools like ChatGPT.

Talks were followed by a lively panel discussion - it was great to see such enthusiasm from our young engineers networking and learning about technology and AI.

A massive thanks to all of our speakers, and the other institutions and their reps for organising this event.

We look forward to seeing you at CHAIN 2025!

👥Apprentice and Technician Welcome Evening👥

Last night past, present and aspiring apprentices attended the yearly welcome evening at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) headquarters at One Great George Street to celebrate National Apprenticeship week. The event was lead by the Apprentice and Technican Champion Karis Briscoe-Foster and was supported by the Vice Chair of Memberships Tabark Majid.

The event started with some networking between all the attendees, followed by an insight into each member of the panel’s career. Aimee Jones and Abigail Owolabi explained their experiences as current apprentices, detailing the roles they get involved in outside of their apprenticeship. Nargiz Kamalova-Payne and Sanil Hirani reviewed their past experiences as apprentices, explained their current roles, how they found transtitioning from being an apprentice and how they found the EPA. Diana Garcia Ortiz explained her role as an Apprentice Skills Reviewer, she spoke on ways apprentices can approach their apprenticeship better and how they can organise their time for a seamless gateway and EPA experience. Once the introductions were over there was a Q&A portion.

The last part of the evening was a discussion task. The two briefs that were investigated were an extension to a railway line on earthquake-prone land with poor ground conditions and a new highway system in an inner city, with a complex tunnel system and a speed limit of 20 mph, which is congested due to traffic. The groups spent some time discussing ways to make the projects feasible, thinking about stakeholders, restrictions, construction implications and ways to incorporate the ICE President’s theme of the year, building connections for a nature and people positive world. The groups presented their ideas back to the rest of the attendees, there were a variety of very well thought out solutions such as conducting surveys for the stakeholders impacted, building the extension in precast sections to reduce disruptions, stabilising the ground, restricting cars and having an above ground transport system to allow more cycle lanes and space to walk on the ground.

Thank you to everyone who attended!

🗓️ICE ECN February Meeting🗓️

Last night, Jacobs office at London Brodge hosted our ICE ECN February monthly meeting, lead by our ECNet Representative and Honorary Secretary Isabelle Sambles.

The evening started with updates from our chair Gabriel McGuigan MEng GMICE as well as our Vice chairs of ECN sub group, Henry Robinson, Tabark Majid and Sophie Smith.

We then had a sustainability moment by our Sustainability Champion Alice Dale, where she spoke about the environmental impact of the six nations tournament and what they are doing to tackle their carbon emissions both on and off the pitch.

Following this, our Diversity, Inclusion and Welfare officer Luca Franzosini shared the results of the Diversity and Inclusion survey. These results help us to ensure that the committee is fully representing all views and needs of our membership. Please do complete the survey if you haven’t already, which you will find in the linktree in our bio!

The focus of the evening was a big internal debate, where we split off into 5 groups and had to argue why our topic should be the main focus of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Of the 5 topics (Productivity, Diversity, Skills Shortage, Sustainability and Emerging Technology), the Emerging Technology group (first picture) was our winner, with a very entertaining and persuasive performance. Congratulations!

Make sure to stay up to date with our events, and don’t forget to join us at our next meeting at the beginning of March, which will be held at our Headquarters, One Great George Street.
