Around 14 million people in the UK live in poverty, and the majority of working-age adults among them are in households where someone has a job. Work is still the best route out, but only when the work itself is decent.

Paid internships so entry roles are not reserved for people whose parents can cover the rent. Progression routes for the people who clean, cook, drive and care, not just the graduate scheme 📊

"What did you get up to at the weekend?" is a harder question than it sounds for a lot of your colleagues 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Today is National Coming Out Day.
For many LGBTQ+ people, coming out is not a milestone. It is a Monday-morning calculation. Do I say "my partner" or "my girlfriend"? Do I correct the pronoun? Do I put the holiday photo on my desk? Stonewall's research has found that more than a third of LGBT staff have hidden who they are at work for fear of discrimination.

That hiding costs energy, and energy spent editing yourself is energy not spent on the job 💬

The point of today is not to push anyone out of the closet. Whether someone is out, not out or somewhere in between is entirely theirs to decide. The point is to build workplaces where the decision feels safe, through visible allies, inclusive policies and leaders who shut down "banter" the first time, not the fifth.

Hate crime happens on the commute, in the car park and in the customer chat window. Your duty of care covers all three 🚫

It is National Hate Crime Awareness Week, led by the charity 17-24-30.

Hate crime targets people for who they are: their race, faith, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. Most incidents are never reported, and many happen in the grey zone around work: travelling to it, representing it, or dealing with the public on its behalf.

Employers often treat this as a police matter. It is also a workplace one. Does your harassment policy cover abuse from customers and clients, not just colleagues? Do staff know they can report an incident and be believed?

Do managers know how to respond in the first ten minutes? 🛡️If you have experienced or witnessed a hate crime, report it to the police on 101 (999 in an emergency) or online through True Vision. Silence protects the wrong people. Speak up.

Your wellbeing strategy was written by people who have never used it. That is the problem 💚

Today is World Mental Health Day. The 2026 theme is "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change", and it is a direct challenge to how most organisations do wellbeing.

Too many mental health policies are built top-down: an app, a poster, a webinar in October. The people who have actually navigated depression, anxiety, burnout or a crisis while holding down a job are rarely asked what would have helped 🗣️

Ask them, and the answers are specific. A manager who knew what to say. A phased return that was not rushed. Permission to turn the camera off. A sick note that did not need a confession.

One in four of us will experience a mental health problem this year. Lived experience is not a niche perspective. It is sitting in every meeting you run.

Today is World Dyslexia Day, sitting within Dyslexia Awareness Week (5 to 11 October).

Around one in ten people in the UK is dyslexic. Many are exceptional at pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, storytelling and seeing the whole system when everyone else is stuck in the detail.

Those are exactly the skills organisations say they are desperate for 💡

And yet the standard recruitment funnel is almost designed to filter them out. Timed online tests. Dense application forms. CVs judged on typos. Interview tasks that reward speed-reading over thinking.

The fixes are not expensive. Offer materials in advance. Allow extra time without making anyone beg for it. Accept video or verbal applications. Judge the idea, not the formatting ✅

Today is World Sight Day.
More than two million people in the UK live with sight loss, and the employment gap for blind and partially sighted people remains one of the widest of any disability group. In most cases the barrier is not capability. It is a PDF job description with no text layer, an application portal that times out, or a video interview platform nobody tested with assistive technology 🖥️

Accessibility is not a bolt-on at the end of a project. It is a design decision made at the start, and the organisations that get it right find it improves the experience for everyone.

Three things employers can do this week: audit the careers site, state clearly how to request adjustments, and talk to Access to Work before a candidate has to.
