The Ten Percent Foundation has made a £500 donation to Purple Patch Arts, a Yorkshire charity helping learning-disabled people to thrive, learn and be heard.

Purple Patch Arts uses creativity as a route into learning. Its sessions combine art, music, drama, movement, literature, sensory activities and discussion. This enables participants to explore subjects at their own pace and in ways that work for them.

Creative and inclusive learning

The charity’s Purple Patch Approach has been developed through years of working with learning-disabled adults and young people.

The work is not simply about providing an enjoyable activity. Purple Patch Arts uses creative learning to support confidence, communication, independence, wellbeing and social connections.

Its services include Lifelong Learning Programmes, work with young people moving into adulthood, accessibility projects and activities that help other organisations engage meaningfully with learning-disabled people.

The Ten Percent Foundation has donated £500 to Purple Patch Arts, which provides creative learning for learning-disabled people in Yorkshire.

AI can be very useful for writing legal job adverts. Give it the basic facts about a vacancy and, within seconds, you can have a reasonably polished advert ready to work on. The important words here are “work on”.

We are starting to see more legal job adverts that have quite clearly been written by AI and then posted without anyone giving them much thought. They tend to be long, rather grandiose and packed with phrases that no solicitor has ever used when talking about their next job. Used properly, AI can save a considerable amount of time. Used badly, it can make your firm sound exactly the same as everyone else.

Here are 10 things we recommend you don't do when using AI to write a legal job advert.

1. Don't post the first draft - treat the first version as exactly that: a first draft. Read it, edit it and make sure it sounds like your firm rather than something generated by a robot for any law firm anywhere in the country.

The UK legal recruitment market remained quieter than expected during the summer of 2026, although there are some signs that the wider employment market may be starting to improve.

During July, the Ten Percent Group added 20 new locum roles, compared with 29 during the same period in 2025. We received 14 new permanent vacancies, compared with 16 last year, while new candidate registrations fell from 73 to 47.

Locum recruitment has been steady rather than busy. Conveyancing locum rates have started to fall slightly, with the lowest rates we are currently seeing at around £40 per hour. Permanent recruitment remains quiet, largely because many solicitors are reluctant to move unless a new position offers a significant improvement in salary, career prospects or working arrangements.

There is slightly more encouraging news in the latest KPMG and REC Report on Jobs.

Locum solicitors are usually recruited because they can arrive and get on with the work without needing their hand held, but this does not mean they should be left entirely to their own devices. Every law firm must have effective systems for supervising client matters and this applies to permanent employees, partners, consultants and locum solicitors. The level of supervision may differ, but the underlying responsibility remains.

Remote locum working has made this issue particularly important. A solicitor may be working productively from home, 200 miles away from the office, but the firm must still know:

- Which files they are handling.

- What stage each matter has reached.

- What deadlines are approaching.

- What advice has been given.

- Where documents and client information are stored.

- Whether anything needs to be escalated.

- Who will take over if the locum becomes unavailable.

The good news is that remote supervision can work extremely well.

Locum solicitor, consultant solicitor and freelance solicitor are often used as if they mean the same thing. They are most certainly not. All three can involve flexible or self-employed legal work, but the underlying arrangements are quite different. The important questions are who instructs the solicitor, who is responsible for the client, whose regulatory structure they work within and who provides professional indemnity insurance.

Here is what you need to know, without requiring a dictionary or an afternoon to work it out.

What Is a Locum Solicitor?

A locum solicitor provides temporary legal support to a law firm, business or in-house legal department. Assignments can last for a few days, several months or continue on an ongoing basis. Locums are commonly used to provide:

- Annual leave cover.

- Maternity leave cover.

- Sickness cover.

- Assistance following an unexpected resignation.

- Support during a busy period.
