Have you ever walked out of an interview feeling positive, only to hear nothing for weeks?
It's one of the most frustrating parts of job searching.
But here's something worth remembering: silence doesn't always mean rejection.
The average UK hiring process now takes around 4.9 weeks, and behind the scenes there can be far more going on than candidates realise.
Hiring managers may be waiting for approvals, coordinating multiple decision-makers, managing annual leave, or simply balancing recruitment alongside their day-to-day responsibilities.
That doesn't make the waiting any easier, but it does mean that a delay isn't necessarily bad news.
If you're interviewing, try to leave each stage with answers to these questions:
✅ What are the next steps?
✅ When should I expect feedback?
✅ Who is involved in the final decision?
✅ Is there anything else you need from me?
And if the expected date passes without an update, don't be afraid to send a polite follow-up email.
Most employers appreciate candidates who are engaged and interested.
A slow process doesn't always mean a "no".
Just don't put your entire job search on hold while you wait for one opportunity.
