A post mother’s day round-up for women in the workforce:
🎨 It was a big win for parents last week as new UK budgets revealed an extension of 30 hours of free childcare fees for children 9m to 2 yrs old. This is a step in the right direction, but more flexible parent policies would greatly help support women in the workplace.
💁♀️ More affordable childcare would unlock approximately 1.7 million women back into the workforce. This amount of women can add £38bn - equivalent to 1% of GDP.
🕔 The number of part-time workers has seen a generational increase from six million in May 1992 to 8.6 million in June 2019. Covid has continued growth of part-time employment, but it has appeared to allow more full-time remote and flexible work.
🙍♂️ Only a third of eligible fathers took paternity leave in the last year, with some suggesting that the cost of living crisis is prompting a hesitation to take time off.
🤜 In positive conclusion, from April to June 2002 to 2021, UK, the employment rate for mothers is higher than for either women or men without dependent children. See the graph below. Source: Office for National Statistics
