One thing that we are seeing a lot more of in the aviation industry right now is the focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

But what does sustainable aviation fuel actually mean?

It's not your typical fuel, it's not a fossil fuel or a zero-emission fuel, and it's not the same as biofuel - so what is it and why is it making such an impact on the industry…

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel, designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Made from renewable feedstocks such as used cooking oil, municipal waste, and agricultural residues, SAF can cut lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels.

SAF has already powered more than 450,000 commercial flights, proving its viability as a mainstream fuel solution. SAF is a drop-in fuel, meaning it can be blended with traditional jet fuel and used in existing aircraft engines without any modifications, making it an immediate and scalable solution.

And what comes with a new product entering the market, a new branch of career opportunities

The rise of SAF offers new career paths in chemical engineering, supply chain logistics, environmental science, and aviation technology. As SAF production increases, so will the need for technically skilled workers across all stages of development and implementation.

At VHR, we support the global shift towards a more sustainable future in aviation by sourcing specialist talent for SAF projects, green aviation technology roles, and digital transformation across the sector.

25/05/2026

One thing that we are seeing a lot more of in aviation hiring right now is the structural skills shortages that have arisen within technician teams over the last 6-12 months.

The global aviation industry has entered a decisive phase in its workforce evolution. As demand for air travel continues to recover and fleets expand, one trend is becoming increasingly clear across airlines, MROs, OEMs, and defence organisations: a persistent and widening skills shortage.

Our team know that this is not a short-term hiring challenge.

It is a structural shift that is redefining how organisations approach aviation recruitment, workforce planning, and talent development.

At VHR, a global specialist in aviation recruitment, this trend is seen daily across our international markets.

We sat down with our General Manager of Corporate Accounts, Boyce , who said: "A big factor behind this is the ongoing skills shortage across the aviation sector, combined with wider political and economic pressures. With talent in short supply, candidates are becoming more selective — placing greater importance on stability, job security, and long-term prospects rather than simply chasing the highest rate."

With the skills shortage making a global impact, not just in the aviation field but across multiple industries…

We want to know your thoughts on this. Has this shift caused your job role to change in any way, or are you looking to upskill yourself in something new due to recent shortages?

You can read more about the current skills shortage issue here: https://www.v-hr.com/blog/where-are-the-biggest-capacity-gaps-in-aviation-technician-teams/
