One thing we have noticed in the past few weeks in aviation is the interest in the International Civil Aviation Organisation and what it does.

With international standards governing safety, security, and sustainability, ICAO ensures that the skies remain open, efficient and regulated.

But not every country or territory is a member

The International Civil Aviation Organisation is a specialised agency of the United Nations, established in 1944 through the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the Chicago Convention. ICAO began operating officially in 1947, and its headquarters are in Montreal, Canada.

ICAO membership allows countries to:
* Access and influence global aviation regulations
* Participate in air safety and security policy-making
* Collaborate on sustainability initiatives like carbon offsetting (CORSIA)
* Share in data exchange and air traffic management systems
* Maintain ICAO-aligned licensing and compliance standards

This is vital for a country's connectivity, tourism, and economic development, as membership helps ensure seamless integration into international aviation networks.

As some of you may have seen, our CEO, Danny Brooks MBE, is currently undertaking a mammoth charity cycle across Spain!

Now on Day 3, Danny has shared with us his experience of the journey so far…

Day 1: Started in the rain at 930 am, which continued most of the day. Very tough day. 165 km and over 3.5km vertical ascent. The toughest day I have had on a bike. 9 hours in the saddle and eventually finished at 8 pm. Was pretty broken.

Day 2: Luckily the weather turned, and we were greeted with sunny skies. 156km and circa 2. Vertical ascent. Tired legs from the day before. Hot in the afternoon and finished with a big 12km hill to climb. Tough but not as tough as day 1. Finished circa 5pm after a 9am start.

Check back with us later in the week to find out how the next few days go on the Laureus Coast to Coast 650km Challenge

One thing we are seeing a lot across the aviation industry right now is how we are solving the industry skill gaps with cross-industry talent.

That's not just swapping an avionics technician to work on adjacent systems, but bringing highly skilled professionals from other industries to upskill and apply their expertise in a new aviation context.

Expanding talent pools beyond traditional aviation backgrounds has become a key strategy for addressing skills shortages. Many technical roles within aerospace share common competencies with other industries, including rail, automotive, energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Professionals from these sectors often possess a wide range of transferable skills such as:

- Mechanical and electrical engineering expertise
- Systems integration and digital technology experience
- Safety and regulatory awareness in highly controlled environments
- Experience with complex maintenance and repair operations

By recognising these overlaps, employers can identify candidates who are capable of transitioning into aviation roles with targeted training and onboarding.

With the help of VHR, these goals will be made achievable.

01/06/2026

One thing that we are seeing a lot more of in the aviation industry right now is the focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

But what does sustainable aviation fuel actually mean?

It's not your typical fuel, it's not a fossil fuel or a zero-emission fuel, and it's not the same as biofuel - so what is it and why is it making such an impact on the industry…

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel, designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Made from renewable feedstocks such as used cooking oil, municipal waste, and agricultural residues, SAF can cut lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels.

SAF has already powered more than 450,000 commercial flights, proving its viability as a mainstream fuel solution. SAF is a drop-in fuel, meaning it can be blended with traditional jet fuel and used in existing aircraft engines without any modifications, making it an immediate and scalable solution.

And what comes with a new product entering the market, a new branch of career opportunities

The rise of SAF offers new career paths in chemical engineering, supply chain logistics, environmental science, and aviation technology. As SAF production increases, so will the need for technically skilled workers across all stages of development and implementation.

At VHR, we support the global shift towards a more sustainable future in aviation by sourcing specialist talent for SAF projects, green aviation technology roles, and digital transformation across the sector.
