City Music Society is the leading promoter of professional chamber music concerts in the City of London and one of the country’s leading music societies. Founded in 1943 by Ivan Sutton (1914-1996), the Society has over 2200 lunchtime and evening concerts to its credit. In its 20 lunchtime concerts per year in the Great Hall of Bishopsgate Institute, the Society presents 45-minute programmes of mus

ic ranging from medieval to jazz, with special emphasis on the great composers of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern eras. Some of the world’s greatest musicians have performed in the Society’s concerts and the Society makes a particular point of offering opportunities to young artists at the start of their careers. Following 66 years of concerts in Goldsmiths’ Hall, the Society’s six evening concerts per year now take place in the exciting refurbished space of the Bishopsgate Great Hall. Over the years, many international musicians have been invited to play for the Society including Francis Poulenc, Peter Pears, Benjamin Britten, Sviatoslav Richter and the Amadeus Quartet.
