History in Plain Sight

We headed over to Hyde Park to photograph the Royal Artillery Memorial, built by designer Charles Sargeant Jagger and architect Lionel Pearson. The spectacular sculpture is broadly recognised as one of the finest memorials anywhere.

Unveiled in 1925, the Royal Artillery Memorial pays tribute to the 49,076 fatalities suffered by the Royal Artillery in the First World War.

Like its neighbouring memorial (the Machine Gun Corps), it received some backlash for its symbolism – unusually, the memorial features a fallen soldier, a rare inclusion for British war memorials.

The memorial captures both the grief and tragedy of the war and the pride and eternal courage of the regiment.

Jagger served with the Artist’s rifles during the war, where was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. The Royal Artillery Museum writes:

‘The memorial is now internationally recognised as one of the finest erected anywhere after the First World War. Its Grade One Designation states “its combination of sculptural force, boldness of conception, vivid narrative and humanity makes the memorial pre-eminent.’’’

History in Plain Sight

In the centre of Whitehall, you’ll find a large bronze memorial emblazoned with a gold inscription: ‘The Women of World War II.’

Designed by John W. Mills and unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005, the memorial is a tribute to an entire generation of women who served their nation – seven million women who volunteered for the armed services, in hospitals, munitions factories, on farms, on the home front, and behind enemy lines. There were over 640,000 women serving in the armed forces during the Second World War.

Seventeen different empty uniforms are sculpted along the sides of the memorial, representing a number of the critical jobs performed by women during the war. The design choice captures another point however: a unique transformation. The National Portrait Gallery writes:

‘These uniforms represent hundreds of vital jobs undertaken by over 7 million women during the Second World War. However, when the war ended and the men returned to their jobs, women were forced to quietly hang up their uniforms and resign; they were expected to return to their lives before the war, often in more domestic roles.’

The monument, standing opposite the Cenotaph, seeks to immortalise the vital contribution women made to the war, an often-overlooked part of world history.
