Nursing pay can feel confusing - bands, pay points, enhancements, agency rates. So let's break it down. 👇

The NHS Agenda for Change system sorts roles into nine bands based on responsibility and skill. Healthcare Assistants typically sit in Bands 2 – 3, newly qualified nurses start at Band 5, and specialist or leadership roles move into Band 6 and above.

For 2026/27, NHS pay rose by 3.3%, effective from April 2026. And while the devolved nations each set their own award, meaning pay isn't identical across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, one thing stays true everywhere: understanding your band helps you plan, negotiate and spot when a move makes sense.

For many nurses, agency work adds another layer of choice - the ability to pick up shifts around a substantive role, or build a flexible career entirely through agency work, with premium rates for nights, weekends and bank holidays.
