Construction workers backing their own.

Band of Builders started with one man wanting to help his mate. When Addam Smith's friend Keith Ellick was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Addam wanted to do something – anything – to make his life a little bit easier.

He rallied some tradespeople. They did the work. And it didn't stop there.

It's now a national charity, and since that first project the value of the work delivered has passed £1m – accessible bathrooms and kitchens, wheelchair ramps, and complete home renovations.

All of it done by volunteer tradespeople giving up their time.

What they actually do:
🔨 Practical projects – everything from installing a ramp to improve accessibility through to full home renovations and landscaping

💷 Emergency financial grants – for people in construction facing a sudden financial crisis, to give breathing space during difficult times

🧠 Wellbeing support – free services covering depression, anxiety, stress, addiction, relationship and financial issues, available 24/7 to anyone working in UK construction

Who can apply: Anyone who has worked in a construction-related trade for more than 12 months – plus their spouse, partner or dependants.

Operative FAQ: How does Optima ensure you're paid accurately and on time?

It's the question we're asked more than any other – and rightly so. Pay reliability is everything when you're contracting.

Here's exactly how it works:

📋 Submit your timesheet online by 17:00 every Monday via the Optima portal. Make sure it's fully completed.

✅ The client approves by 17:00 Tuesday.

💷 Payment arrives on Friday – provided your timesheet is in on time and fully approved.

⚠️ Timesheets received after the Monday deadline will not be processed until the following week. Late submission means delayed payment – it's that straightforward.
