Yep, you read that right – a recruitment company is trialling the 4-day working week 👀

Over the past year, I have read many positive articles on the 4-day working week – 61 companies in the UK trialled this from June to December last year and 92% have continued, on a permanent basis.

Of course, like anything, there are pros and cons to everything, and this model doesn’t work for everyone, but we’re prepared to trial it and pray the pros outweigh the cons 🙏

Recruitment is tough and many recruiters will be able to tell you about burnout, not finding the time to switch off, go to the gym etc – we’re not about that and want to be able to promote the positives:

📈 Stronger focus and productivity
🧠 Looking after your health and being able to do a gym class in peace
💪 Lower stress levels
😎 Lay in bed on a Friday or do your chores, allowing you to spend Sat & Sun being with family and friends, hobbies, long weekends away

We are all taking Fridays off – we have decided against staggering the days off simply because if everyone else is working on your day off, you get work anxiety and your colleagues will still email / message you (we’ve all been there!) – you can’t fully relax.

Our team are fully onboard and are excited for this trial – we have set clear expectations around our goals and what we want to achieve over the 4 days. We kick off the trial on Monday!

Work / life balance is key in life – you shouldn’t have to work 5 days in order to get 2 off.

Let’s change things up – any other companies thinking of trialling the 4-day week too, especially within the recruitment space?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Do you know how to properly prep for an interview?

Interviews are essential for ensuring a good match between an employee and employer. In order to make the best impression on a prospective employer, it’s important to prepare for your interview beforehand.

Firstly, you may want to consider the types of questions you could be asked:

❓ Competency-based questions – you may be asked to give examples that demonstrate your skills and experience. Have 3 strong examples, which can be used across multiple questions.

❓ Strength-based questions – you may be asked about what you enjoy doing, or what you excel at.

❓ Technical questions – depending on the role, you may be asked about your knowledge and understanding of specifics related to the role.

❓ Situational judgement questions – you may be asked how you would act in certain work situations.

❓ Value-based questions – you may be asked about your personal values to see if you would fit in with the company’s goals and culture.

Once you have an idea of the types of questions you may be asked, prepare for your interview:

👉 Read the job description to see what skills, knowledge, or qualities the employer is looking for.
👉 Look at the company website and familiarise yourself with what they do, and it’s worth noting a few things you like about it and check out the hiring managers LinkedIn profile.
👉 Read over your CV to identify areas that the interviewer may ask you about – for example, they may want you to elaborate on one of your previous roles.
👉 Prepare answers to questions you may be asked. And practice speaking them with someone else.
👉 Be yourself!

Oh, and aim to be 5 minutes early – just in case!

Never underestimate the importance of having a great LinkedIn profile!

Having a professional, well-written, up-to-date LinkedIn profile is hugely beneficial.

It could help you to land a new job, find new business opportunities, or simply connect with like-minded professionals.

And if you are on the job hunt - even if you aren’t applying for jobs through LinkedIn, many hiring managers / recruiters will still find and view your profile.

If you want to reap these benefits, it’s important to optimise and enhance your LinkedIn profile. You might be the best at your job – but if your profile doesn’t reflect that properly, nobody will know!

Here are some quick fixes you can make to your profile today:

1 Ensure your profile is set to ‘public’

2 Update your profile picture and cover image (no catfishing!)

3 Keep your contact info and location updated

4 Perfect your headline - don’t just write your job title; add something else that will make you stand out. E.g. ‘10+ years’ experience’

5 Be smart about your skills – list only relevant ones and have the most important ones at the top (recruiters search by skills within LinkedIn Recruiter)

6 Try to avoid using overused ‘buzzwords’ – these will only make you blend in with the crowd. Some of the most overused words on LinkedIn include: “motivated”, “passionate”, “driven”, “extensive experience”, and “responsible” Zzzz

7 If you’re looking for a new role or open to hearing about new opportunities, do select the ‘Open to Work’ option – again, recruiters use this tool heavily during headhunting

And to really push your profile to the next level, try following company pages and joining professional groups within your industry. This will help to increase your reach.

Have you ever heard of ‘quiet promotions’? 🤫

Even if you aren’t familiar with the term ‘quiet promotion’, I’d bet money that you’ve experienced it – either first-hand, or through somebody else.

Picture this…

When you started your position, you had a set job description with a list of responsibilities, and your salary was based upon that. (Pretty standard, right?)

But over the months/years, your boss has gradually added new responsibilities to that list – now you find yourself managing tasks and expectations that you didn’t have in the beginning.

But the twist? Your pay has not changed!

You’re still on the same salary, but your job is way harder than it used to be. How does that work?!

Back when you’d just started your role, your boss may have even promised you a future bonus or a pay rise if you take on these new responsibilities… but you’ve had no sight of the money! 💸

Bottom line is: you should get paid for the work you do. If you work more, you should get a pay increase. Simple.

Some businesses and organisations love using this trick to squeeze everything they can out of their employees without having to pay up for it. It’s a time-old tactic that can be detrimental to people’s careers and work-life balance.

If this is happening to you, pop me a message as I would love to help you secure a stronger paid position!

We’re rebranding! 🖊

It’s only a small change, but hopefully one that will bring about some strong developments…

We are changing our name from ‘Virtual PA London’ to ⚡️ VPA London ⚡️

Why are we doing this? 🤔

Because, after developing over the years, we now offer SO MUCH MORE than just virtual services!

So, it feels quite limiting to have the word ‘Virtual’ in our name – it’s misleading and deterring to potential customers who are looking for non-virtual services.

Whilst virtual services are still very much a big part of us, we have evolved into a business that offers all kinds of Executive Office Support - that includes virtual (remote), hybrid, and on-site.

👆 And we don’t want to skip over our hybrid and on-site services anymore! Or have potential customers think we’re primarily or solely focused on virtual services.

We recognise that one shoe doesn’t fit all, which is why we offer a range of Executive Office Support solutions to our clients and candidates. From temporary cover, to part-time Virtual Assistants, to permanent roles, we do it all!

We believe that growth and change are such integral parts to running a successful business. That’s why we have evolved to create a more scalable business that can provide solutions to a wider pool of clientele…

…and it’s time for our name to evolve with us!

About us

Virtual PA London was founded in 2017 by Hannah Collins and Jessica Jones - two school friends from Surrey

Hannah & Jess both left school in 2005 and went onto college where they completed a PA and Secretarial course together – after both passing this course with flying colors, their careers shortly started

Hannah and Jess have built up a wealth of knowledge within different industries and support service roles - with their combined knowledge on-board, they decided to go solo and launch Virtual PA London
