AWITA London AWITA is a non-profit networking group that aims to advance the careers of women in the visual arts.

The Association of Women in the Arts is a networking association dedicated to women who work in the visual arts. Founded in London, we foster business links within the arts community, hosting informative discussions and providing a forum for women to connect with other like-minded professionals. We actively support the creation of exciting new collaborations and provide networking and mentoring opportunities for those looking to develop their careers and/or businesses. Comprised of individuals with a minimum of 5 years working in the professional arts field, the association is open to gallerists, art advisors, educationalists, museum and fair directors, auctioneers, artists, curators and collectors.

Our post-Frieze morning on Sunday 25 October takes place inside The Light Eaters at Town Hall by Bottaccio.

Curated by Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst (Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst) Virginia Damtsa (Virginia Damtsa) the show brings together artists working with light and perception, including James Turrell, Carsten Höller, Loie Hollowell and Leo Villareal.

Doors open at 10:30 with coffee and time to be with the work. Mollie and Virginia then introduce the exhibition, before Kate Spicer, Rose Ferguson and Rebecca Dennis ask what light, perception and art can do for a body that has been “on” all week.

A rare slow Sunday in the building, and a different way to see the exhibition.

After a week of fairs, dinners and openings, the body doesn’t always get the message that it’s over. The adrenaline keeps running long after the pace has dropped.

Join us for a Sunday morning reset, part conversation and part practical reboot 😌💫

Journalist Kate Spicer (Kate Spicer) talks with nutritionist and functional medicine practitioner Rose Ferguson (ROSE FERGUSON MSc Adv Nut.) and somatic breathwork practitioner Rebecca Dennis (Rebecca Dennis). They’ll cover light, perception and consciousness, and what art can do for restoration. Rebecca will then lead a short nervous-system reboot, and the morning finishes with a double book signing of The Reset and Let It Go.

Curators Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst and Virginia Damtsa introduce The Light Eaters, with work by James Turrell, Brian Eno, Carsten Höller, Loie Hollowell and Leo Villareal.

Yesterday afternoon, AWITA members were among the first through the doors at Paraíso, London’s new fair for Latin American art, at Ambika P3 for its VIP day 🌴

Thank you to AWITA member Jane Soliman (Jane Soliman) and Daniela Galán (Daniela Galan L - Amalgama Academy) of Amalgama Art & Academy for an insider introduction to the fair. From there, the group spread out across the stands, talking with gallerists and artists along the way.

It was a special afternoon for us, with seven AWITA members part of the fair. Thank you to everyone who welcomed us onto their stands, including Victoria Law (Victoria Law Projects)at Victoria Law Projects, Ana Benavides (Ana Benavides) with Art Elsewhere, Florence Woodfield Morais (Florence Woodfield Morais) at Astéri Contemporary, Paige Ashley @[handle], Luz María Osorio @[handle] and Patricia Christie @[handle].

Paraíso runs until Sunday 18 October at Ambika P3, and is well worth the trip.

NOW OPEN: Paraíso opens at Ambika P3: London’s new fair for Latin American art, bringing leading contemporary artists into dialogue with Modern and Postmodern masters from across the region. Its first edition focuses on Mexico.

Frieze Week is the art world’s most intense exercise in determining value. But what about us?

At The Measure of Value, our members’ conversation at Roseberys Belgravia, the discussion turned to how we measure our own worth as professionals.

So much of our sense of value comes from outside us: titles, salaries, promotions, invitations. But what happens when those markers don’t reflect what we actually contribute?

Our speakers talked about learning to trust their own judgement over time, about women’s careers still taking longer to rise, and the quiet systems that hold us up, like the friends we message when things fall apart.

One idea stayed with us: time, care and rest are valuable too, even when nobody puts a price on them.

So this week, between the fairs, the openings and the dinners, give yourself some. AWITA HOUSE is open on Berkeley Square until Friday for members and friends: a quiet corner, a coffee, a seat in the garden and a moment to regroup 🙏🏼☕️

Lean hard into the soft.

What does successful leadership actually look like? Not simply the hard measures we traditionally use to define success, but the softer things that create the conditions for it - trust, kindness, graciousness, strong relationships, the confidence to disagree, and finding pleasure in what we do.

After nine years leading Tate as its first female Director, Maria Balshaw (Maria Balshaw) reflected on a career shaped by working closely with artists - and on the trust, risk-taking, listening and generosity those relationships have taught her about leadership.

Joined by artist Rene Matić (Rene Matić), in conversation with Péjú Oshin (Péjú Oshin) the discussion explored what it takes not just to lead, but to create the conditions in which other people can thrive.

Last week, AWITA Switzerland launched On The Ground, a new event series that uncovers what moves beneath the surface of Switzerland’s living art scenes.

We began in Zürich in collaboration with BINZ39, led by curator and director Julia Künzi , who guided us through some of the city’s most vital spaces: Damien & The Love Guru Damien & The Love Guru, Sentiment sentiment, and Plymouth Rock Plymouth Rock.

Through walking, we spoke about the significance of these spaces and how they form a flexible, self-organised layer within the arts ecosystem, where artists, curators and audiences can test new relationships and formats.

The walk ended back at BINZ39 with a drink, pickles and a visit to No Full Stop, a group exhibition by Anne Bourse, Mania Godarzani-Bakthiari and Isabelle Morton that embraces intuition, openness and the unresolved.
