It was February 2006 and my manager took me for the obligatory 1st day pizza express lunch with my new team. This was day one of accountancy recruitment in London and I stepped back into the office with an almighty faceplant on the marble floor entrance to my new office.

I got up, returned to my desk, picked up the phone 📞 and never looked back.

It feels natural to wait until you need to job hunt or hire before developing a trusted contact for your team or career growth. It often pays to be proactive, the problem is in some instances when you need us, it may well be too late.

If this resonates and you’re an accountant, let’s set up a call. I’m happy to share my market wisdom, growth tactics and guidance for those that need it.

Breaking into the finance sector is about securing the right first role. From an accountancy and commerce and industry perspective, here are five practical ways to get started:

â‘  An accountancy degree can give you strong foundations, but it is not the only route. A degree can help, but the same fundamentals can also be built through AAT, on-the-job learning, and studying for a professional qualification. There is more than one way in.

② Focus on opportunities that offer breadth of exposure. Whether in a large company or a smaller one, prioritise roles that give you broad experience. Early breadth gives you more flexibility to pivot later.

③ Master the fundamentals. Strong Excel skills, attention to detail, understanding financial statements, and reliability are key expectations.

④ Use qualifications in line with your experience. It is often better to progress your qualifications in correlation with your practical experience, rather than qualifying too quickly without the exposure to apply what you are learning from your ACCA, CIMA or ACA.

⑤ Treat your first role as a platform into challenge or complexity. Seek roles that offer month-end exposure, reporting, and learning opportunities. A high-challenge environment builds momentum. Entering a complex niche, especially one you are passionate about, can also accelerate your career through focus and expertise.

If you are at the start of your journey and unsure where to begin, feel free to reach out.

A foggy drive to Manchester this morning to meet a fantastic client.

I really enjoyed walking around their buildings and seeing their growth firsthand.

Congratulations to my successful candidate placed last month 🥂. It was great catching up over lunch, and I can already see a very bright future for you here 🤝.

Last week, I made an impromptu decision to fly to New York to spend time with my grandmother.

It reminded me how quickly priorities come into focus when family matters most.

It wasn’t planned and it wasn’t convenient, but it was important. With her being elderly, I knew I needed to spend time with her, and I am grateful I was able to do so.

Spending that time together was grounding. Being close to someone who has lived a full life has a way of reshaping how you see things. It reminded me that life is not just about deadlines, targets, and to do lists.

After the meaningful family moments, the trip morphed into a 48 hour road trip. An evening taking in the NYC skyline. A spontaneous day trip to Boston to see some in laws. Catching up with close school and uni friends in Pound Ridge and Wappingers Falls, right by the Hudson. New places, familiar faces, great conversations.

It wasn’t technically a holiday. I still opened the laptop in the name of GALENT but it was energising and grounding. A full week surrounded by friends, family, and new environments has a great way of resetting your mindset.

It’s also a reminder of why relationships sit at the heart of what we do.

Recruitment, at its best is less transactional and more personal. It is about understanding people’s stories, ambitions, and challenges, and helping them move forward with confidence.

If you are thinking about your next hire, your next move, or your wider finance strategy I’m here to talk.

If you would like to have a confidential conversation about hiring, career moves, or building high performing finance teams, my inbox is also always open.
