Most people think silver service is simply about serving from the left and clearing from the right.

In reality, that’s only a small part of it.

Professional silver service teaches observation, timing, anticipation, confidence and the ability to create a seamless experience for guests. These skills are valuable not only for butlers, but also for housekeepers, house managers and anyone working within luxury private service.

The technical skills can be learned. The mindset behind exceptional service is what truly sets professionals apart.

Have you ever received service that completely exceeded your expectations?

The best interviews aren’t about asking more questions.

They’re about asking better ones.

The right questions reveal professionalism, attitude, communication and whether someone is genuinely suited to your household—not just whether they have the right experience on paper.

Recruitment should always be about finding the right long-term fit for both the household and the professional.

What’s the best interview question you’ve ever been asked—or asked someone else?

Experience is incredibly valuable—but it isn’t the whole story.

I’ve met professionals with decades of experience who have never received formal training, and others with fewer years who have invested in understanding the standards behind luxury private service.

The strongest professionals combine experience with continuous learning.

That’s what builds confidence, consistency and the ability to adapt to different households and employers.

Do you think experience alone is enough, or should professional training always be part of career development?

The best candidate on paper is not always the right person for the household.

Skills matter, but so do discretion, attitude, communication and the ability to understand the rhythm of the home.

The best placements are not simply about filling a vacancy. They are about finding the right long-term match.

Absolutely.

Professional housekeeping is about much more than cleaning. Understanding standards, organisation, fabric care, wardrobe management, discretion and attention to detail all begins with knowledge.

That’s why online learning can be such a valuable first step. Once you understand the principles, you can practise and refine those skills in your own environment and continue developing throughout your career.

Learning never stops—and the best professionals never stop investing in themselves.

Would you consider learning professional housekeeping online?

No two days are ever the same in a private household.

Plans change, guests arrive and priorities shift. The strongest professionals stay calm, adapt quickly and keep standards high.

A career gap is not automatically a red flag.

People leave roles for many valid reasons. What concerns me more is when every previous employer is blamed and there is no sign of self-awareness or accountability.

One difficult household can happen to anyone.

When every employer was supposedly the problem, that deserves a closer look.

When a private household repeatedly loses capable, experienced staff, it is not always because the wrong people were hired.

Often, the real issue is the working environment.

Unclear expectations, changing responsibilities, poor communication and a lack of trust can gradually make even very good staff feel that the position is no longer sustainable.

Repeated turnover should be treated as information. Instead of focusing only on replacing the person who leaves, households may need to look more closely at the culture, leadership and structure behind the role.

Good staff retention starts with clarity, respect and realistic expectations.

Do experienced housekeepers still need training?

Absolutely.

Experience is valuable, but every private household is different. Standards, routines, materials, products and expectations can vary enormously from one home to another.

Professional training is not about starting again. It is about refining skills, improving consistency and making sure everyone understands the standard expected.

Even the best professionals continue learning.

In private service, taking too long to decide often means losing the best candidate.

The strongest professionals rarely stay available for long.
