2025 Final Day, Big Finish!

It’s our last day— and we’re going out with a bang at Havas, King’s Cross!

Last night, we put our pitching skills to the test with industry pros, gaining confidence and honing our storytelling. Huge thanks to everyone who joined—it was super helpful for our confidence.

Today kicked off with an inspiring fireside chat with Amanda Fone and Lis Barton. From Barclays grad scheme to Chief Customer Officer at MONY Group plc, Lis shared her journey and top tips on finding the right company culture. Her message? Be effective, be kind.

Next, Liz Nottingham FIPA Nottingham pushed us to ‘Play Big,’ tackling our inner critics and proving that growth happens outside our comfort zones. She built on Rosie Dalling’s ‘powerful communications’ session, reminding us that words shape how we’re seen—so use them to project our positive selves, transforming how we talk to people.

Emily Fairhead-keen then gave us the inside scoop on agency life at Havas, revealing how departments collaborate and evolve. She shared essential strategy and campaign insights—practical tools we’ll take forward.

After a quick lunch break, Sophie Hodges got us thinking about resilience and wellbeing. A breathing exercise later, we all walked away with action plans to manage stress and stay strong.

Sarah Baker reinforced the importance of stealth—relationships matter more than ever, but they’re also harder to build. Adaptability is key.

Finally, Amanda Fone and Liz Nottingham FIPA wrapped up by making us reflect: What did we bring? What did we gain? This might be the last day, but it’s just the beginning. Like a grad scheme for returners, we’ve built a powerhouse community. Now, it’s time to lean in, leverage our networks, and silence that inner critic.. We have all learnt so much

As Amanda put it: The question isn’t who will let us in—it’s who’s going to stop us?

2025 Day 5.

Today we are on the 9th floor of this impressive building at Kings Cross .

I took a moment to look out at the view over Coal Drop Yard, with all its design brilliance. When I asked ChatGPT to define it for me, it responded with ‘a blend of industrial heritage with contemporary design. Kings Cross has been reinvigorated, a superb example of growth and transformation'.

How fitting, I thought.

I’m supporting the organisers of the programme this year but I managed to sneak into a couple of the sessions. As a delegate from last year’s cohort, I know they are too good to miss.

Rosie Dalling, Head Coach at LifeHikes®, grabbed the 9.30am slot by the collar and got everyone moving.

I remember Rosie so well from last year. And that’s just the point, when we leave a room we want to be remembered. Rosie taught us that our body language, handshake, eye contact and the headspace we are in, in essence ‘how we show up’ says everything about us.

After a quick coffee break, it was back in with the inspiring Martin George from the The Marketing Academy. Keep moving, stay relevant, stay connected. We don’t have to be in the workplace to be across what is happening in any industry and Martin gave us so much great advice on how to stay recent and how to create our own personal brand.

I didn’t get a chance to see Tom Jarvis, from Wilderness - The Social Media Agency social media agency but I caught up with some of the returners later who had been excited to hear his updates. He shared the current trends in digital marketing, including the new strategy of viral seeding and using community events to create hype.

Rounding up our speakers of the day, I briefly had the pleasure of meeting Stephen Vowles, CMO AJ Bell Financial Services whilst we waited for his session. His career has wiggled between conventional marketing jobs at P&G and Sainsbury’s to leading the digital transformation at Argos. A phenomenally interesting career with wise words to pass on.

And then to our networking evening. A great opportunity for our delegates to pitch to a brilliant group of company guests who gave their time to listen and give feedback.

I stayed to help with the 3 minute whistle to keep things on track, then quietly made my way home.

The confidence in the room is growing, I can feel it, and I can’t wait to hear how they all got on tomorrow.

2025: Day 4 Highlights…

The venue for today was at the magnificent edifice which houses the numerous Havas Media Network’s (Headline partner, 2025) agencies.

The day started with a welcome speech focusing on Havas Media Network’s diversity of perspectives within the marketing industry from the CEO of Havas Media Network UK, Affleck.

This was followed by a presentation and Q&A session from Michael Moruzzi and Sarah Apps, Senior PR and Communications Manager at the Rail Delivery Group (aka National Rail et al).

Next up, was a distinguished panel of speakers comprising a former Sports Minister, Dame Tracey Crouch, along with the Managing Director and CEO of Women in Football and the US-affiliated London City Lionesses, Yvonne Harrison and Sarah Batters who inspired us to think about a career in sport highlighting the various strides achieved and challenges faced within women’s sports as a whole.

Jennifer Hayashi, Creative Director of Havas Media Network, London gave us confidence to embrace LinkedIn to find a marketing job. Telling her story as a mother and freelance marketer.

The day wrapped up with two panel sessions. The first was a chance to grill Havas Media Network’s Group Chief People Officer, Macpherson followed by a panel including volunteer Emma McDowell and alumnae Polly, Liz, Cihan and Anja who graciously shared with delegates how they got back into marketing work after their career breaks.

The delegates really felt elevated to take on the task as returners to the marketing industry in today’s world of work.

Bring on Day 5!🚀

Breaking Barriers, Embracing Change: The Wild Energy of Day Three

The energy at Day Three of the Returners Programme on March 21st at VCCP was absolutely electric—so much so that many attendees instinctively dressed in animal prints, amplifying the wild spirit of the day!

The discussions were raw, real, and powerful. We heard from incredible speakers who have navigated career breaks, parenthood, redundancy, and reinvention, proving that careers don’t have to be linear to be extraordinary.

🔹 Fiona Couper reminded us that flexibility is a two-way street—as long as the job gets done, setting boundaries is not only possible but necessary.

🔹 Sean Taylor painted a vision of today’s workplace, full of opportunities for returners and the value of transferable skills gained through life experience.

🔹 Tracy Woods urged us to focus on HOW we do things, especially when facing bias in hiring.

🔹 Maya Bhose shared her inspiring journey from redundancy to founding a charity that helps returners find their way back to work.

🔹 Amanda Fone delivered a masterclass on selling yourself within three minutes—because how you answer a question “So what do you do?” matters!

The key takeaways?

🚀 Break barriers—every industry has a skills gap waiting to be filled.

🚀 Resilience is your greatest strength—use it.

🚀 Network, be bold, and go for leadership roles.

🚀 Embrace change, and challenge outdated career norms.

🚀 Charity work can be a powerful re-entry point after a long career break.

🚀 Unlearn, keep learning and learn how to learn!

And as a fitting finale, a typo on one of the slides marked the date as "218 March"—perhaps a sign that this movement is already shaping the future!

Day 2 of the Returners Programme, another incredible day of learning, connection, and inspiration! The sessions covered a range of topics, but one thing stood out was the talent, experience, and resilience in the room. The ability to adapt, problem-solve, and bring fresh perspectives makes every delegate an asset to any workplace.

A huge thank you to our brilliant speakers: Katja Hall (Ithaca Partners), Ruth Hooper (she/her) (Women's Professional Leagues), Alexandra Malone & Suzie Rook (SSE plc), Peter Gasston (VCCP), and Liberty Covill (VCCP)—for sharing such valuable insights.

Key takeaways:

🔹 Consider the impact of the changing geopolitical landscape

⚽ Understand what it takes to succeed in sports marketing

🌍 Learn how corporate affairs teams are driving the transition to net zero

🔀 Careers aren’t linear, embrace change, move across industries, and create your own path

Every session was packed with real-world insights on career pivots and navigating change. Honestly, anyone looking to return to work should invest the time to attend the programme. Huge thanks to f1 Recruitment Limited for making happen.

We’re !

Week 1, Day 1 got off to a fantastic start with Amanda Fone setting the tone for the event, reminding us that success isn’t about how you win- it’s about who’s going to stop you.
There were some fabulous expert speakers, including Liz Nottingham’s interactive workshop exploring our personality types, sources of inspiration and what drives us. Sharon Lloyd Barnes from Advertising Association shared key industry buzzwords for 2025, the challenges facing advertising today and her own inspiring journey as a ‘returner.’
We wrapped up the day with an insightful talk from Avril Lee, CIPR board member and Chair of the DE&I Network, who explored the rise of influencers and the evolving PR landscape.
What a fantastic opportunity to connect with other bright, motivated returners, each bringing such energy, enthusiasm and diverse experience. We can’t wait for Thursday’s session!
A huge thank you to Amanda, her team and all of the incredible speakers!

NoTurningBack2020 Ambassadors Inspire Future Marketers at Royal Holloway

This week, NoTurningBack2020 ambassadors Lolade Nwanze, MBA and Kupa Matondo, alongside dedicated volunteer Emma McDowell, attended the Royal Holloway, University of London Careers Fair in Egham. Their mission? To inspire diverse talent to explore careers in marketing, sports marketing, and communications.

Their passion was clear:

Lolade: “Home now! Thanks a lot for the opportunity to impact young and upcoming professionals Emma McDowell. It was so fulfilling sharing our journeys (pairing with Kupa Matondo⁩ was so seamless) and connecting with the really interested students afterwards. It sounds like they were genuinely engaged and found the session useful.

It was def worth the 4+ hours of driving (both ways) and gave my kids an eventful half term break. We should do this again.

Kupa: “Thanks so much for today Emma McDowell⁩ and Sarah Bishop⁩ great to have connected with the Royal Holloway team and of course with you too Lolade Nwanze, MBA⁩. I’m delighted to know the students were inspired and had questions to ask. I look forward to what comes out of today’s talk and beyond.”

Harriet Fletcher, Employer Engagement Officer at Royal Holloway, University of London, shared a student’s thoughts:

"It was a very motivating event that encourages me to dream big and be confident in what I plan to do’

Huge thanks to our ambassadors and Royal Holloway for an inspiring event! ✨

Yesterday evening, a group of Sports sector leaders, including governing bodies, membership associations, Club COO's and sports marketing consultancies, gathered to discuss an important recent study by business consultancy Brands with Values on the impact of Culture in the UK Work Place.

Martin Roach of Brands with Values shared research measuring the importance of inclusive, safe environments for workplace success. Building a workplace where employees feel valued, included, and safe is not just a “nice to have”; it directly impacts performance and innovation.

The panel chaired by Adrian St Clair Walcott CMgr CCMI included Dame Tracey Crouch from Hanover Communications, Yvonne Harrison CEO of Women in Football and Youssef Hassan from World Rugby who commented on the research findings and how they apply to the UK sports industry. ‘Prioritising psychological safety, belonging, equity, and creativity in the Sports Sector will foster a culture that empowers every employee to thrive’.
