When Rebecca applied for one of our Sales roles, she stood out to us.
She did not have the required Sales experience - so why did I keep reading her CV?
Her Personal Statement read:
“My goal in life is to be the best and do my best. Perseverance and dedication have enabled me to achieve goals, even when they did not seem feasible”.
Rebecca should not have passed our initial screening for the job, yet, we decided to interview her.
Why?
Because the statement revealed Rebecca’s character in very few words.
It showed;
➡️ Ambition: she sets high standards for herself.
➡️ Work ethic: she is willing to put sustained effort in.
➡️ Resilience: she doesn’t give up.
➡️ Self-belief: she knows that effort can overcome setbacks.
It also sounds personal rather than copied from a standard AI CV template.
The phrase “even when it did not seem feasible” hints that Rebecca has overcome real challenges, which makes you want to know more.
Job applicants, please hear this from the recruiters’ mouth — before you write your personal summary, try to forget the buzzwords, we want to know who you are.
In the end, Rebecca’s experience was too junior for this job, but we will be keeping in touch with her about other opportunities.
Good luck Rebecca
