Talking salary can be daunting, but nailing the conversation can make a huge difference to your career. Here's how to negotiate your salary like a pro:

✔️ Do Your Research: Before any negotiation, look up the industry standard for your role. Make sure you know your market value, which will vary by location. The 2025 SPVS survey is still ongoing, but last years can be found here https://spvs.org.uk/2024-salary-survey/. You can also ask your recruiter, who will have UK-wide knowledge of the market.

✔️ Showcase Your Value: Highlight your achievements and specific contributions. Be ready to discuss how you've made a difference in your previous roles and what you can bring to the table at your new practice.

✔️ Be Clear and Confident: State your desired salary confidently, without hesitation. Use a specific number rather than a range - it shows you've done your homework.

✔️ Consider the Whole Package: Sometimes benefits, bonuses, and career development opportunities can be just as valuable as the base salary. Weigh them all before you decide.

✔️ Stay Professional: Always be polite and professional. If negotiations hit a snag, remain calm and take it as an opportunity to further demonstrate your problem-solving skills.

It's all about preparation and presentation. Remember, you're worth it.

Let's chat more about how you can implement these strategies. Reach out for a 1-2-1 CV review or interview prep.

Mentorship is a game changer in career development, especially in the veterinary sector. 🌟 It provides guidance, knowledge, and encouragement, enabling you to navigate the complexities of your career path. But what are the real benefits?

🔵 Real-world insights: Learn from someone who has walked the same path. A mentor can offer you a unique perspective on challenges and opportunities specific to your career in veterinary practice.

🔵 Professional growth: Mentors can help you identify strengths and areas for improvement. Feedback is invaluable for honing your skills and advancing in your career.

🔵 Networking opportunities: A mentor can introduce you to their professional network, opening doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and learning experiences.

🔵 Emotional support: Veterinary practice can be demanding. Having a mentor who understands the pressures and demands of the role can provide much-needed support and encouragement.

🔵 Career progression: According to a CIPD report, individuals with mentors are five times more likely to progress in their roles than those without. This is particularly relevant within the UK veterinary sector, where mentorship can guide you through significant career milestones.

In our experience at Recruitment Limited - The Clinical Recruiter , candidates who engage in mentorship programmes often find themselves better equipped to tackle challenges and seize opportunities in their careers.

Navigating the Interview: Questions to Avoid 🚫

Interviewing can be a tightrope walk, balancing between getting to know candidates and respecting boundaries. It's essential to understand that some questions are not just inappropriate, but they're outright prohibited by law. Knowing what's off-limits protects both the interviewer and the interviewee, ensuring a fair and unbiased process. Here's a rundown of questions that should never make their way into an interview room.

👤 Personal Lives: "Are you married?" or "Do you plan on having children?" These are big no-nos. They could be deemed discriminatory and suggest decisions might be made based on family commitments rather than the candidate's qualifications and abilities.

🛐 Belief Systems: "What's your religious affiliation?" Employers have no right to delve into someone's faith as it has no bearing on job performance and risks discrimination accusations.

🌍 Origin Origins: "Where were you born?" Rather than pigeonholing based on place of birth, confirm their work permit or visa status if necessary, and move on.

💼 Previous Pay Packets: "What's your current salary?" Some UK regions are starting to view this as potentially perpetuating pay inequality. Focus on the value candidates can bring and what the company is prepared to pay for it.

💉 Health History: "Do you have any health conditions?" It's illegal to ask health-related questions before a job offer except in very limited circumstances. Reasonable adjustments for disabilities should be the employer's concern after an offer is made.

📆 Weekend Plans: "How do you typically spend your weekends?" This could be interpreted as fishing for information on personal, religious, or lifestyle choices, which should be irrelevant in evaluating a candidate's professional worth.

Following the fine line of legality and sensitivity creates not just a safer interview environment, but one that respects candidates and focuses solely on their professional capabilities and fit for the role.

Respect the rules and engage on competencies and experiences. That's how you build a strong, diverse team in today's workplace. Remember, a focus on skills and potentials, not personal trivia!
