Do You Need to Live in the U.S. to Sponsor Someone?

Yes, you do! As a U.S. sponsor/petitioner, you must have your principal residence, or domicile, in the United States. This means you need to live here for the foreseeable future to file the Affidavit of Support, with a few exceptions. For more info, check out the Affidavit of Support (I-864 or I-864EZ) Instructions.

Upgrading a Petition if You're Now a U.S. Citizen

Did you file a petition for your spouse as a lawful permanent resident (LPR) and have since become a U.S. citizen? If so, you need to upgrade the petition from family second preference (F2) to immediate relative (IR). Just send proof of your U.S. citizenship to the National Visa Center (NVC), such as:

A copy of the biodata page of your U.S. passport, or
A copy of your certificate of naturalization.
