After a job interview – do you appraise your own performance?
We all know prep is important – but if you aren’t getting anywhere, a little self-appraisal can be really helpful.
I always review with my candidates and get them to think about these 4 things:
1. Did I build a rapport with the person? Think about body language, your tone of voice, ebb and flow of the conversation – did one person dominate?
2. Did I prepare to the best of my ability? What were the gaps and what would you do differently next time?
3. What question ‘threw’ me – could I answer it? What could I do differently another time?
4. Do I think this is an opportunity I wish to pursue? Why or why not.
Once you’ve considered the points, take on board your learnings and wait for the feedback. You can’t change the past, just learn for the future.
I finish with this question:
Did you do everything possible to perform at your best?
If the answer is yes, be pleased regardless out the outcome. If it was not meant to be, it was not meant to be.
If the answer is no – take on board your learnings for next time and make a change for a different outcome.
