I was interviewed on TV this morning - do you agree with this?

Talk TV invited me on again to discuss the report that came out yesterday that said most recruiters believe that 57 year olds and over are "too old" to get a new job.

Do you agree?

He asked my opinion - and I'm not one to sit on the fence when asked.

The sad reality is that ageism, like many other discriminations does exist - regardless of whether we want to believe it or not - they do.

In the same way 'being too young' can also go against you also.

He asked if there is anything that older candidates can do?- I said keep up to date with new and emerging technologies including AI and try to use your age as a positive - i.e bringing a wealth of knowledge, learning and understanding as well as a high likelihood that you may stay in that job until you retire - as opposed to being young and 'job hoppy' - again, sweeping generalisations, but you get my point.

Do you think you have you been discriminated against in a job interview? and for what reason?

As always I love going on TV or radio - it was also quite nice to wear a bit of make up first thing in the morning - for a change!

At 19 I moved to New York...

I sent an email to a book publishing company offering to support them editorially because I had just graduated with a degree in Journalism (which did not qualify me as a professional at the time but I so wanted to move to NYC)

They hired me.

3 months later I returned home and wanted to work at the local radio station as a radio presenter but there was no jobs so I pitched to the Station Manager that I would work for free for 3 months to prove what I could do, on the proviso that if I was good, they'd find the money to pay me.

They did.
It was the best job I've ever had - one of the lowest paid, but one of the best.

From there I moved into producing and did soooo many different things that quite honestly I just 'wanted to do.'

From working as a Video Journalist for MSN to interviewing at the Oscars in LA to landing a variety of highly paid voice over gigs to interviewing celebrities on the red carpet to my last job as Head of TV - every single one of these jobs had 1 major thing in common.

I pitched for them.

There was no job adverts to apply too, no AI or Automation to help, no Canva to create beautifully designed CV's and Linkedin was not used like it is now.

I literally (and I know how it sounds) pitched my way into my dream jobs.

It wasn't easy of course and it didn't mean I got every opportunity I wanted (I didn't) and at one time I was desperate to interview some celebrities at a movie junket that I again 'pitched' my way into that gig by jumping off a pier as part of the annual Worthing Birdman competition (which is now banned I might add)
..and I also pitched to the main newspaper on the South Coast that I'd make a great weekly newspaper columnist and that people would want to hear about my life -19 years later I still write that column and now they promote the paper with my face on the front every Friday. Sounds silly but I feel like I've earnt that...I have never missed 1 column. Not ever.

My point is and don't get me wrong times are tricky, there are more people looking for work then there are jobs, but please know that opportunities are out there.

They might just not appear in the form a job advert.
