Why I support working from home and hybrid working

Flexible working isn’t about convenience — it’s about effectiveness, inclusion, and sustainability.

For many roles, working from home or in a hybrid way delivers real benefits:
• Better work–life balance, particularly for parents, carers, and those with health needs
• Increased productivity with fewer unnecessary distractions
• Reduced stress, burnout, and sickness absence
• Greater access to employment for disabled people and those with long-term conditions
• Lower commuting costs and a positive impact on the environment
• Improved staff retention and access to a wider, more diverse talent pool
• Reduced overheads for businesses
• Clear evidence since COVID that many roles can be performed effectively outside a traditional office
• Support for regional equality, rather than concentrating opportunity in expensive city centres

Crucially, decisions about whether someone works from home, hybrid, or in an office should sit with employers and employees, based on the role, performance, and individual circumstances — not imposed by politicians who aren’t part of that working relationship.

Back in 2013, I had the privilege of working as a Job Coach in Manchester for a contract supporting individuals who had long term barriers to find employment and build confidence in challenging circumstances. One client I supported was a lone parent caring for his son while also navigating the impact of domestic violence. Despite these difficulties, and living with disability, he showed incredible resilience and determination.

Today, more than a decade later, he reached out to me again. His son is now 17, and as his caring responsibilities have ceased, he is ready to re‑enter the workforce and has not had any success over the passed year.

He said: “You are the best Job Coach I ever had. You believed in me when I was struggling as a disabled lone parent, caring for my son and overcoming difficult times. Now that my caring role has ended, I’m ready to move forward to a job, and I’m grateful you’re helping me again with my CV and employment advice”.

I’m honoured to be helping him once more by updating his CV, free of charge.
As I often say, sometimes it feel nice do something for others simply because we care.

This reminds me why I do what I do: supporting people to overcome barriers, rebuild their lives, and move forward with dignity and hope.

Happy Friday everyone! ❤️

✨ Career pivots are powerful when every skill and achievement is brought to light.
I recently supported a private client who wants to move a career in healthcare into the creative sector.

After working together on their CV, they shared this:

“Thanks Bev, for your positive encouragement. Going to apply this week, with the amazing CV you have done for me. Definitely gives me more confidence. 😊”

This is exactly why I love CV and portfolio development, extracting every skill, every piece of experience, and shaping it into something that works.

Helping people see the value in their journey, whether clinical, creative, or community‑based, is what makes applications stand out.

If you’re considering a career change, remember: your skills are transferable, your story matters, and the right framing can open new doors.

✨ Nothing makes me happier than seeing my clients shine! ✨

I just helped a client with their first draft of a new CV and this was their response:

“Thank you for this. It’s brilliant. 🤩”

It’s moments like these that remind me why I do what I do, helping people feel confident, prepared, and ready to land their dream job. 💼

If you’re ready to take your career to the next level, let’s work together to make your CV stand out! 💪

“I’ve got a new job!” I will never tire of those magical emails 🙌

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been supporting a client who wanted to step up in his career but wasn’t sure how to showcase his strengths.

We rebuilt his CV from the ground up, highlighting his skills, values, behaviours, professionalism and commitment.

After what should have been a multi-stage interview process, he had just one interview and then imposter syndrome hit hard. I reminded him that self-doubt often appears right when we’re growing.

Today, only a few short weeks after we started working together, he’s achieved more than the outcome he hoped for…he’s secured a fantastic new role.

I’m thrilled for him and honoured he trusted me to support him. These wins are exactly why I do what I do.

If you’re ready for a career move and want support with your CV, confidence, interviews or job search, get in touch with me!

I’d love to help you get results too.

🔒 Safeguarding & Recruitment: Closing Loopholes in DBS Checks
As an Employment Coach and DBS Reform campaigner, I’m offering to speak to HR teams and hiring professionals free of charge about my petition and the safeguarding risks it addresses in England and Wales.

I’m calling on the government to reform the DBS system so that civil harassment outcomes, such as legally binding court undertakings, are disclosed on Enhanced DBS checks.

Right now, individuals subject to serious civil restrictions for repeated harassment can still pass a DBS check and work with children or vulnerable people.

This loophole poses a clear safeguarding risk.

Many safeguarding professionals are unaware that there are two court systems for harassment and stalking, civil and criminal, and that this distinction affects safety and breaches codes of conduct.

Jess Phillips MP has noted that DBS checks mainly focus on criminal records, with police discretion to add non‑criminal information, and employers relying on references.

But this misses the point:
➡️ Civil court restrictions are not automatically shared
➡️ Police discretion leads to dangerous inconsistencies
➡️ Expecting perpetrators to self-declare is unrealistic and undermines public protection

📢 By engaging HR teams, we can raise awareness, strengthen safeguarding practices, and build momentum for reform.

✨ 12-Week Programme Impact Story ✨
One of the most rewarding parts of my work is seeing the transformation that happens when someone rediscovers their confidence and begins to thrive in their job search.

“Bev has motivated me when I have felt very low in confidence after getting several interviews but no job offer. At one point, I felt unmotivated, and as a result, Bev organised a mock interview to get to the heart of where I can improve in interviews, as this is an issue for me.
Bev is always there to support me and tell me positive things about myself that I don’t realise I possess. She has also provided me with effective strategies to get back into work: making the most of LinkedIn, connecting to recruiters on LinkedIn, and applying in volume to increase my chances of getting interviews, and advice on what to say to recruitment consultants when they first screen me for a role.
Bev has also spent time with me prepping me before I had interviews. She has effectively highlighted my skills and experience on my CV, resulting in several interviews in just a few weeks! Bev has been amazing!”

This feedback captures exactly what the 12‑week programme is designed to do:
🔹 Rebuild confidence after setbacks
🔹 Provide practical, tailored strategies for job search success
🔹 Highlight strengths that candidates often overlook in themselves
🔹 Deliver hands‑on support with CVs, LinkedIn, recruiter engagement, and interview preparation

The result? Multiple interviews in just a few weeks, and a renewed sense of motivation and self‑belief.

💡 If you’re feeling stuck in your job search, this programme is about more than applications, it’s about unlocking your potential, building resilience, and equipping you with strategies that work!

I’m honoured to be attending the Global Youth and Adolescent Consultation for UN Women CSW70, hosted by the incredible Oluwaseun Ikusika, a lawyer, author, and global advocate for gender equality and disability rights.

The theme of the event is “Ensuring and Strengthening Access to Justice for All Women and Girls”, and I’ll be contributing a recommendation based on my lived experience and ongoing campaign work to close a critical safeguarding gap in England and Wales.

My recommendation: Civil protection orders, including Non-Molestation Orders, Stalking Protection Orders, and Undertakings, do not consistently appear on Enhanced DBS checks. This loophole allows perpetrators to continue working around children and vulnerable adults with a clean record, even after court-imposed restrictions.

Survivors, many of them young women and mothers, are forced to fight for protection alone, while police and courts often fail to act on breaches. The system relies on criminal convictions and discretionary reporting, leaving civil remedies invisible and ineffective in safeguarding contexts.

I’m calling for:
Automatic inclusion of all civil protection orders and breaches on Enhanced DBS checks
Clear national guidance for police and employers on safeguarding disclosures
Survivor-led reform to ensure legal protections are enforceable, visible, and trauma-informed

This reform is essential to ensure that girls and young women are not retraumatised by systems that protect perpetrators more than victims.

Parliamentary petition in the comments below ⬇️

The event takes place on 6 December at 6PM UK time. You can register here:

Let’s keep pushing for justice, visibility, and systemic change.
