Private hospitals are delivering more hip and knee replacements than the NHS for the first time since the procedures were widely introduced in the 1960s and 1970s.
While the NHS continues to prioritise Covid-19 care in the UK, a recent analysis of official data by healthcare consultancy Candesic for the Financial Times reveals that independent hospital chains, including Circle Health Group, Nuffield Health, HCA Healthcare, and Spire Healthcare, have seen a significant increase in the number of privately paid patients.
Though the overall volume of hip and knee operations remains below 2019 levels, the research highlights a notable shift.
In the first eight months of this year, 56 percent of all surgeries were conducted in private hospitals, compared to 40 percent during the same period two years ago
