The UK now has a six-week cross-skill programme for experienced oil and gas technicians moving into wind.

Developed by the ECITB with the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and ORE Catapult, it trains Electrical, Mechanical and Instrument & Control technicians to work as wind turbine maintenance technicians on onshore and offshore assets.

The route runs both ways. Technicians keep the competencies to return to oil and gas as maintenance demand moves between sectors.

What’s included:
- ECITB technical pathways across electrical, mechanical and I&C
- GWO Basic Safety Training and Basic Technical Training
- Energy Institute Wind Turbine Safety Rules Core Course
- Hands-on time inside a working wind turbine
- An ECITB certificate of training, with GWO records on WINDA

Who can apply: technicians with current, proven competence in their main trade, for example through Connected Competence technical tests.
The programme is jointly funded by the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Scottish Government through the Transition Training Fund. ASET Training is taking expressions of interest for its first cohort, starting Q1 2027.
