💭 Today reminded me why HR and leadership aren’t always black and white.

After a review meeting that ended in a short-service dismissal, someone said to me:

"I couldn’t do your job"

And honestly? I get it. 😔

It’s never easy being part of those conversations. Seeing someone’s job end is uncomfortable, emotional and sometimes what’s said sticks with you long after.

But here’s why I do it:

👥 I support the business owner or manager - guiding, stepping in if things get tough, making sure it’s fair and respectful.

⚖️ Sometimes letting one person go protects many others, a team, or even a business.

💡 It’s not cold - it’s responsible.

And yes, HR isn’t all tough moments.

🎉 I also get to do the good stuff - supporting growth, celebrating achievements, reviewing pay, improving wellbeing…

At its core, this job is about people - through the highs & lows 💛

They were all enthusiasm at the start — then vanished faster than a bag of office biscuits. No message. No notice. Just… p**f.

Scary? Yep.

Avoidable? Definitely.

Let’s talk about that conversation.

You know — the one you’ve been putting off.

The “we need to talk about your attitude/timekeeping/comments/insert awkward thing here” chat.

Most small business owners dread it.

Not because they can’t handle it — but because they don’t want to make it worse.

Here’s the thing: when you avoid the conversation, you’re having it anyway… just silently.

Through frustration, awkwardness and everyone else noticing what’s not being dealt with.

A few tips to make it less painful:

💬 Be clear, not cruel. “This isn’t working” lands better than “You’re the problem.”
👂 Stick to facts, not feelings. “You’ve been late 4 times this month” beats “You’re unreliable.”
🕰️ Do it early. It’s easier to redirect behaviour than to unpick resentment.
🤝 End with a way forward. Clarity gives people a fair chance to improve.

Handled right, a tough conversation isn’t a confrontation — it’s a reset.

Maybe it’s the “Oh… was that meeting today?” type.

I hear the same things from business owners all the time:

💬 “I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say.”
💬 “I don’t want to make it worse or end up in legal trouble.”
💬 “I’ve let it slide too long — now it’s awkward.”
