2026 is a year of change for us, year end reflections, future planning and work life balance.

The latter has always been hard for me, but I've disciplined myself to do more "me" things.

So today, the sun shone, the wind dropped so I abandoned my desk to make the most of it.

Not sure if it's playing hooky, or the fresh air that's invigorating but either way, my head is so much clearer.

Try it, you may be surprised.

When did you last ask someone how they are and actually listened to the answer?

We've all done it, but now more than ever, it's time to talk and it's time to listen.

I’ve seen a few posts lately about the use of AI within Recruitment and HR and it got me thinking ...

AI is certainly valuable tool, but in a people led business, I find it hard to allow AI do what only a human can do … build a picture from a CV and fill in the gaps with a conversation.

Older job seekers certainly aren’t afraid of change. They’ve adapted to new systems, new managers and evolving ways of working throughout long careers. But, from the conversations I’ve had today, many feel job hunting feels fundamentally different.

Increasingly, the first interaction isn’t with a person, it’s with an algorithm.

CVs are filtered by applicant tracking systems, often judged on keywords, recent job titles, or formatting rather than depth of experience which can include a couple of curve balls within the work history.

Years of hard-won knowledge can be overlooked simply because it doesn’t fit neatly into modern templates or search criteria.

This creates an unspoken concern. Is the system assessing capability or filtering out careers that don’t follow a linear, contemporary pattern?

While AI is often positioned as a way to remove bias, it is trained on historic hiring data. That data doesn’t always favour longer careers, broader roles or progression paths common among older candidates.

What AI struggles with is context.

It doesn’t easily capture:
* The judgement developed through experience
* The calm that comes from handling real pressure
* The ability to mentor others and stabilise teams
* Pattern recognition built over years, not months

These qualities rarely appear as keywords.

As a result, many older candidates find themselves learning a new skill just to remain visible, translating experience into system-friendly language, shortening CVs, adopting new terminology, and tailoring applications repeatedly. It’s often a significant amount of unseen work, just to reach the point of consideration, and that's just the first stage of the process.

Despite this, older job seekers continue to learn, adapt and contribute. They are not resistant to technology, they simply want it to recognise value more fairly.

The real challenge is ensuring AI supports better hiring decisions, rather than narrowing the field to those easiest to categorise.

Experience hasn’t lost its relevance.

It just needs space to be seen.

"How was your Christmas" will probably be the first thing you're asked today.

There’s a huge expectation about what Christmas should look like.

It’s everywhere, on social media and LinkedIn. The food, the parties, log fires, snowy walks, and perfectly curated time with family and friends.

Then we see the other side: stories about loneliness at Christmas. And while they’re important, I sometimes wonder if all of this tells people how they’re supposed to feel at this time of year.

Yes, many people are alone, missing loved ones, grieving, elderly, or homeless, and they deserve care, kindness and support all year round, not just at Christmas. (Just like foodbanks need donations now, not only in December.)

But there’s also another group we don’t talk about much:

* People who are alone and actually okay with that.
* People whose plans change suddenly.
* People whose Christmas looks different, unexpectedly.

This year, that was me.

My husband was admitted to hospital on 23rd December. While his consultant was understandably worried about him not being home for Christmas, neither of us were. We both knew he was exactly where he needed to be.

My Christmas Day was simple.

Dogs sorted in the morning, then the afternoon spent in a hospital room, after he’d enjoyed a rather lovely Christmas lunch.

We chatted, laughed, put the world to rights (very much his speciality), and just spent time together. After 40 years of marriage, he’s still the best company, even when he’s unwell.

What this Christmas reminded me is this:

If plans change, it’s not a failure.

* If your Christmas looks different, that’s okay.
* If it’s quieter, simpler, or even just you, that’s okay too.

Christmas has become so commercialised that we’re often told how it should be celebrated. But it doesn’t really matter where you are or what you’re doing.

What matters is who you’re with, and sometimes, that might just be yourself, there really are no rules.

It’s that time of year again …. and what a year 2025 has been.

Our first full year of recruiting in Cumbria and what a journey, challenging at times with plenty of trips up and down the M6 making sure all our clients and candidates get the support they deserve, I think the car is looking forward to a well earned rest as much as I am.

We’ve worked with some absolutely lovely clients and candidates who have trusted and believed in us and I hope we’ve not disappointed, I really have enjoyed every moment (mostly ...)

Considering 2025 has been a year of recruitment challenges for many, we’ve very much held our own through some good old fashioned business development, networking and the trusty “client drops”, I still love the buzz of turning up at reception and chatting to clients, and who doesn’t love a quality bit of stationery!

So what are my takeaways from 2025 …

✅ work with the right people, those who’s values mirror yours, whether a client, candidate or a supplier, collaboration is your friend, embrace it.
✅️ share you successes, let your tribe celebrate with you, remember they’ve always got your back.
✅ keep it real, talk about the bad bits as well as the good bits … constant positive posts give people the ick, they know it’s not real, we do not live in a perfect world, show the real you.
✅ continue to know and understand your competition, don’t be fazed by them, learn from them, but always do it your way. You're successful for a reason.
✅ stay visible, even on your worst days.
✅ live by your rules, this is your journey.
✅ … and once again … don't do long posts ... people get bored ...
.. if you're still here ... wishing you all a Happy Christmas and every success for 2026. We will all go into 2026 with many challenges, but your tribe will have your back, don't be frightened to ask for support if you need it.

For us, there are some pretty amazing things happening in 2026, but more of that next year.

I make no apologies for the image ... it's purely self indulgent.
