Not your teachers.
Not your employer.
Not your family.
Not your critics.

The direction of your life is shaped by the choices you make every single day.

The jobs you apply for.
The risks you take.
The conversations you have.
The people you surround yourself with.
The standards you set for yourself.

It’s easy to hand over the script and let circumstances dictate the next chapter.

It’s harder to take the director’s chair.

To trust yourself.
To back yourself.
To make decisions that align with your values, even when others don’t understand them.

I’ve learned that some of the biggest opportunities in my life and business came from decisions that felt uncomfortable at the time.

Growth rarely arrives with certainty.

But it does arrive when you choose courage over comfort.

Be intentional.

Be accountable.

Be the director of your own story.

There are calls you make in recruitment…
and then there are those calls.

The ones where you already know, before they answer, that you’re about to change someone’s life.

This week this has happened on multiple occasions...

Dialling a number knowing you’re about to tell someone:
👉 “You got the job.”
👉 “They chose you.”
👉 “You smashed it’’

And for a moment, everything else stops.

Just that pause…
That silence before it lands…
Then the emotion on the other end of the phone.

That’s the bit people don’t talk about enough.

Recruitment isn’t just CVs and interviews.
It’s people. Real people.
With mortgages, families, confidence knocks, big ambitions, and sometimes… a lot riding on one decision.

We get a front row seat to that.

And when you do it properly, When you actually care, That call never gets old.

It’s not just a placement.
It’s a moment.

And honestly?
It’s why I still love what I do. ❤️

Earlier in my career, I thought success meant saying yes to everything.
Every opportunity.
Every client.
Every role.

But experience teaches you something different.

It teaches you that real growth comes when you become selective.
When you protect your time.
When you work with people who align with your values.
When you focus on quality over noise.

Because not every opportunity is the right opportunity.

These days, I’m more focused than ever on long-term relationships, honest conversations, and doing recruitment the right way — even when it’s not the fastest way.

Behind every business owner…
There’s a human being juggling far more than most people see.

Early mornings.

School runs.

Building Recra as a mum has taught me something incredibly valuable…

World Book Day… the working parent’s early-morning leadership test. 📚

This morning in our house, the boardroom opened at 6:30am.

The agenda?
World Book Day costume preparation.

Now anyone who follows me will know I occasionally share snippets of life with my children. My daughter Matilda keeps life… interesting. She has very strong feelings about clothing. Textures, labels, seams, socks, tights — if it feels even slightly “wrong”, the whole system shuts down.

And today we were attempting something outside the norm. Which, in Matilda-terms, is basically corporate restructuring at 7am.

What should have been a quick “throw the costume on and go” turned into negotiations, adjustments, deep breaths and a fair bit of problem solving amongst tears.

And it reminded me of something we see in business every single day.

Not everyone operates the same way.

Some people thrive with change.
Some need familiarity and structure.
Some need reassurance before they can move forward.

The real skill — whether you’re leading a business, managing a team, or simply trying to get a child out of the door dressed as a book character — is understanding how people tick and meeting them where they are.

This morning wasn’t smooth.
But we got there.

Hair brushed.
Costume accepted.
School run completed.

And just like that, I logged on to start the working day, already having navigated the toughest negotiation of the morning.
