According to SFG20’s State of Facilities Management 2026 Report, 51% of organisations reported a shortage of FM staff, while 42% identified significant skills gaps.

For employers, that makes access to specialist talent increasingly important.

The challenge is particularly noticeable when a business needs experience in a specific contract environment, technical discipline or project setting.

Building relationships with the market before that requirement becomes urgent can give businesses a much stronger starting point when hiring.

For us, maintaining those relationships is a big part of what specialist recruitment should provide.

How do we move away from a “run to failure” approach to asset management?

That’s one of the big questions being explored as part of IWFM’s new Strategic Asset Management Roadshow this October.

The sessions will look at how FM and workplace teams can take a more joined-up approach to managing assets throughout their lifecycle, particularly as AI, digitisation, compliance requirements and cost pressures continue to change the way estates are managed.

It’s an important conversation.

Good asset management isn’t just about maintaining buildings and equipment. Done properly, it can reduce risk, improve performance and help organisations make better long-term investment decisions.

The roadshow is visiting Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, London and Dublin throughout October.

In FM, that can mean experienced contract leaders, technical specialists and people with the right sector or client-side experience are rarely sitting on the market for long.

More than half of organisations report a shortage of FM staff.

Alongside that, 42% say they're experiencing significant skills gaps across their teams.

As buildings become smarter, compliance requirements evolve and client expectations continue to grow, finding the right people is becoming increasingly important.

For employers, that means thinking beyond filling today's vacancy.
It's about building teams with the skills and capability to support tomorrow's challenges.

The organisations investing in workforce planning, development and recruitment today will be in a much stronger position for the future.
