A new industry report has warned that fragmented gender equity initiatives across the built environment are costing the sector more than £740,000 annually through duplicated effort and limited collaboration.

The research, published by Building People CIC and Women in Planning, found that while dozens of organisations are actively supporting inclusion across construction, FM, engineering and property, many operate with limited funding and little coordination.

The report also highlights wider workforce challenges, including ongoing skills shortages, retention issues and a significant gender pay gap across skilled trades.

Industry leaders are now calling for a more unified, sector-wide approach to improve long-term impact and support future talent across the built environment.

This year’s theme, ‘FM: cultivating belonging through built environments’, is a timely one, because the conversation has moved on. It’s no longer just about keeping sites operational, but about creating spaces where people feel comfortable, supported, and able to do their best work.

That comes from the decisions FM leaders make every day, from how workplaces are designed, to how they’re maintained, to how teams are supported on the ground!

FM has a direct impact on wellbeing, inclusion, and retention, and in a market where good people are harder to find and keep, that matters more than ever.

World FM Day is a chance to recognise that impact, to share examples of what good looks like and reconnect with the wider FM community across networks, regions, and disciplines.
