"Most industries don’t have billions of dollars in public funding to get them out of the starting blocks. Ours does, and we also have private dollars in residential and nonresidential construction – albeit more volatile markets historically – to propel us further forward.

The fundamental drivers propelling our industry have fortunately been in place for many years now. Looking back, the industry has slowly but steadily grown just about every year since the Great Recession.

Consider, too, that some of the industry’s top-performing years over the last 15 were through COVID – years that set some industries back – reaffirming the essential nature of aggregates.

“You’d think coming out of a slump like COVID that you’d kind of get a peak and it’d level off again,” says Karen Thompson, president of Haver & Boecker Niagara’s North America and Australia operations. “We’ve really seen the business continue in a very good form. It’s encouraging.”

That aggregates are essential is a boon lifting us up. Anyone picking up a copy of Pit & Quarry knows this already. Getting those outside the industry to grasp this concept will always be critical to our success, but the last decade and a half of gains shows our value is being recognized.

The sorts of gains captured during this 15-year run are arguably more desirable than the ones experienced in the years prior to the Great Recession".

Kraemer Mining & Materials’ Cody Ladd explains.

In an era where digital transformation is reshaping every industry, AI-driven automation has emerged as a cornerstone of modern business operations. From small startups to multinational corporations, enterprise software solutions powered by AI are proving instrumental in streamlining processes, enhancing decision-making, and driving innovation. Beyond efficiency gains, AI is fostering a culture of employee empowerment by automating repetitive tasks and freeing up human resources to focus on strategic and creative work. Today, businesses worldwide are recognizing the potential of AI to not only streamline complex, data-heavy tasks but also to redefine traditional job roles, preparing organizations to thrive in an increasingly fast-paced, data-centric landscape.

The New Wave of Operational Efficiency

AI-powered automation has redefined how organizations handle routine and repetitive tasks, which were traditionally dependent on human labor. With AI-driven systems, businesses can process massive datasets, detect patterns, and make accurate predictions at remarkable speeds, thereby eliminating inefficiencies inherent in manual processes. In finance, for example, machine learning algorithms can identify and mitigate potential fraud with impressive precision, while in manufacturing, AI-optimized production lines are reducing downtime and minimizing error rates. These advancements in automation extend far beyond accelerating workflows; they are reshaping entire operational models, setting new standards for accuracy and productivity.

"In the North, many pits and quarries have been working all season to keep up with customer and internal demands. These put teams into a mode of keeping stockpiles up and keeping up with sales.

When the season begins to relent, winter maintenance usually takes center stage. Whether we know it or not, this changes our perspective from operational to maintenance. And when we change modes, the likelihood for human error increases.

The first item teams should consider when shifting to maintenance is communication. When routines are shaken up, teams should take the time to properly communicate. This can look different, depending on your company and strategy. But it often includes toolbox talks, tailgate talks, daily or weekly huddles, or something similar where teams talk about upcoming assignments, risks and controls.

The key to effective communication is making sure everyone involved is engaged. Don’t just read off assignments and get to work; chat with your team and make sure people understand their work scope, risks and hazard controls.

Most incidents have an aspect of compromised communication. During my time coaching teams in our industry, I’d encourage them to “take five,” meaning take five minutes whenever something seemed off or a work scope changed.

The next thing teams should consider is the safety protocols they may need during maintenance – ones they would not need during regular operations. A slew of new hazards arises when we disassemble, repair, inspect and maintain equipment. This entails confined space protocols, lockout/tagout (LOTO) and fall protection – the big three that presents the potential for the most harm and must be controlled."

When it comes to data analytics, machines should be doing the heavy lifting. More and more businesses rely on data analytics to make smarter, more informed business decisions and to stay on top of industry changes amid competitive markets. As a result, data scientists are pushed into extracting, processing, cleaning, and analyzing data from multiple sources on a daily basis for multiple purposes within an organization.

According to research from IBM, data scientists spend 80% of their time searching and cleaning data, rather than extracting insights from it. Organizations want their employees spending less time buried in data, and more time using it to make quick, informed decisions that help businesses grow. Success requires what I call “democratizing data analytics” to enable more employees to make quicker decisions without relying on technical data teams to extract valuable insights for them.

Simply put, democratizing data analytics means equipping teams with business intelligence (BI) or no-code and low-code tools so that the broader tech community gains the ability to realize benefits. These gains include enhanced innovation, additional time to work on priority projects, and accurate processes that are being completed in a more timely manner. Non-technical employees will be able to make informed data-driven decisions themselves and focus on their core responsibilities without having to depend on the data team.

New generation high reach excavators are being introduced by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) to bring customers into the future and raise the bar on strength, productivity and operator comfort across demolition applications.

The new EC400 High Reach and EC500 High Reach excavators respectively replace the previous generation EC380EHR and EC480EHR models — now with a fresh design and equipped with the latest innovations to pack a punch against the competition.

Martijn Donkersloot, product manager of demolition equipment at Volvo CE, said, "We are committed to producing the ultimate in heavy-duty demolition machinery. These new models have been designed to efficiently respond to customer needs, which we found out after talking to many customers and operators all over the world — and because we make our own machines from start to finish, every detail has been carefully considered and improved to ensure the best possible performance."

Benefitting from the new generation update, these machines enjoy a 15 percent fuel efficiency improvement due to engine pump optimization, better ground level access and longer service intervals, more precise controls and a quieter working environment. And due to the Smart View with optional obstacle detection, the working environment is safer for operators and other on-site workers too, according to the manufacturer.

Revenues in the CRH Americas Materials Solutions business were up 4 percent in the third quarter to $5.2 billion.

CRH, which reported its latest quarterly results Nov. 7, says pricing gains and contributions from acquisitions contributed to the revenue gains. The company says weather was a disruptor to the business in some Americas Materials Solutions markets.

Additionally, CRH reports that third-quarter EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) in Americas Materials Solutions was 16 percent ahead of the prior-year period.

Globally and across all businesses, CRH says its total third-quarter revenues were 4 percent ahead of the prior-year period. The company’s revenues totaled $10.5 billion in the third quarter.

“Our third-quarter results represent another strong performance with further growth in sales, profits and margins,” says Albert Manifold, chief executive at CRH. “Despite contending with adverse weather in the quarter, our differentiated solutions strategy continues to deliver industry-leading performance, while the strength of our balance sheet, combined with our disciplined approach to capital allocation, leaves us well positioned to capitalize on the growth and value creation opportunities that lie ahead.

“We are pleased to reaffirm our guidance midpoint for 2024 and, looking ahead to 2025, we expect favorable underlying demand, positive pricing momentum and another year of progress for CRH,” Manifold adds.
