I’ve made a recruitment song 🙄 Nobody asked me to but apparently anonymous job adverts now irritate me enough to set them to music. 😂

Faceless, generic adverts primarily serve one person: the recruiter looking to move from appointment to fee as quickly as possible.

Regardless of your sector, you know the ones:

“Market-leading client…”
“My successful client…”
“Our exclusive client…”
“My retained client…”

Blah, blah. Yawn. Blah.

They tell good people almost nothing, so they give them almost no reason to act.

The result isn’t necessarily bad applicants. It’s a weak benchmark. Mainly active jobseekers responding to a bland proposition, while the person who might move specifically for your business never even sees it.

I’ve watched several perfectly average FDs join businesses this year that could (and should) have attracted exceptional ones.

Those businesses may never know who they failed to reach.

Properly marketing a role takes thought, confidence and commitment. Anonymous recruitment is quicker, easier and protects the recruiter.

Clients accept it because it has somehow become the norm.

As an owner-manager, there are very few defensible reasons to hide your identity, particularly when recruiting an executive who could materially affect the growth, investment potential and eventual value of your business.

If the business simply isn’t ready to put its name to the opportunity, I’d usually suggest we address that first and then approach the market properly.
