In an era where sustainability is at the forefront of global concerns, civil engineers have emerged as key players in the quest to build sustainable cities. With their expertise in designing, constructing, and maintaining urban infrastructure, these professionals are instrumental in creating environments that are not only socially and economically viable but also environmentally friendly.

From developing innovative solutions to combatting climate change to integrating renewable energy sources into urban landscapes, civil engineers are paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future. By considering factors such as water conservation, waste management, and green spaces, civil engineers are actively shaping our cities to be more livable, resilient, and sustainable.

The future of civil engineering in sustainable city development holds great promise. With ongoing advancements in technology, increased awareness of environmental issues, and a growing emphasis on sustainability, civil engineers will continue to play a vital role in transforming our cities into vibrant, livable, and sustainable spaces for all.

An additional 120,000 rail workers are needed by 2023 to meet industrial demand, as reported by City & Guilds and NSAR.

The UK's railway sector has been experiencing positive developments, with an increase in passenger demand post-pandemic resulting in a surge in orders. Growth in the rail sector has been hampered by political challenges, and the delays in the HS2 project, aimed at cost reduction, have demonstrated that such project setbacks can lead to long-term cost escalation.

Let's take a look at the skills shortage in rail and how it looks currently:
🚅28% of workers in the current rail workforce are over the age of 50
🚅Only 16% of the workforce in rail is female
🚅200,000 rail workers will need new digital skills by 2030
🚅110,000 rail workers needing upskilling
🚅80,000 rail workers needing reskilling
🚅10,000 new apprenticeships will need to be created and resourced

So, how can we work together to plug the skills gap? Investing in training such as apprenticeships will be a critical way to plug the skills gap. Evidence from NSAR showcased that £1 spent on training on rail skills in the UK results in a £3 return on that investment. Investing in skills can also make a huge difference on an individual level as it gives people from all backgrounds the chance to progress in their careers.

Over 225,000 workers are needed in construction by 2027 to meet demand. If demand is met, the construction industry in the UK will boast over 2.67 million workers, up by 2% from its peak in 2008.

The sectors with the most demand are Private Housing, Infrastructure, Repair and Maintenance, however, to meet this demand we have a long road ahead with over 58% of construction companies reporting that they’re struggling with recruitment.

Despite facing challenges due to economic uncertainty and the skills gap, the industry is actively adapting and seeking solutions to inspire the next generation of construction workers and upskill existing employees. By offering degree apprenticeships and investing in modern construction techniques, employers can attract and retain a talented workforce, fostering growth and innovation within the sector.

However, while these strategies meet long-term goals, the industry is struggling with short-term goals affecting the delivery of major construction projects. As an agency, we regularly consult with our clients on how they can remedy the current situation and get teams on the ground and projects running efficiently.

Our advice to our clients and those recruiting across construction;

✅ Look at skill set rather than sector experience; candidates are robust and with the right onboarding and training can become dependable workers.

✅ Team fit is everything; Choose candidates who can demonstrate reliability over candidates with high skill and low reliability. Candidates with low dependability can affect crews more than we realise through tardiness, productivity and efficiency.

✅ Be flexible; whilst projects have set timelines and deadlines that need to be met, the rest of the world is now working more flexibly. Take this into consideration when setting project requirements, and allow for variable shift patterns.

✅ Get on-site; for our clients who are predominantly office-based, we see the highest staff retention from those companies whose HR, Talent Acquisition and operations teams have a good working relationship with those onsite, especially project managers.

At HSQ Recruitment, we bridge the gap between clients and candidates. If you’re looking for support in recruiting for positions across construction from groundworkers to regional managers, design engineers and surveyors, and want an agency that can truly guide you in how to get the best for your teams, then contact HSQ Recruitment on 0113 887 4430 or email [email protected]

Promoting sustainability in the rail industry is no longer a choice; it's a necessity. As we tackle environmental challenges, the role of rail in providing sustainable, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation solutions has never been more important.

Let's take a look at the facts of sustainability in rail:

🚆 A freight train can move a ton of cargo nearly 500 miles on just one gallon of fuel, making it more efficient than trucks and other modes of transportation.

🚆 Passenger rail emits about 20-30% less carbon dioxide (CO2) per passenger mile than cars and planes.

🚆 3 times lower noise emissions - Rail freight transport causes only 1/3 of the noise in freight transport.

Rail companies will need to look for candidates who are not only skilled in traditional rail work but are also adaptable, willing to learn new practices, and have a basic understanding of environmental issues.

As rail companies increasingly commit to sustainability, roles across rail will evolve, requiring new skills and knowledge to meet the emerging demands of a greener rail industry.

"The UK needs to hire 158,000 workers to fill the current demand for construction - demand is expected to increase over the next few years."

Despite grappling with economic uncertainty and a widening skills gap, the industry is adjusting and pursuing strategies to inspire future construction workers and enhance the capabilities of current staff. Through degree apprenticeships and embracing contemporary construction methodologies, employers can attract and retain a skilled workforce, nurturing expansion and ingenuity within the sector.

Here's advice to our clients and those recruiting across construction;
