Stoptober is an annual public health campaign that helps people quit smoking for 28 days consecutively in October.

This campaign encourages smokers to quit smoking for 28 days in October, which is the first step for chain smokers to quit forever. Evidence shows that if people can avoid smoking for 28 days, they are five times more likely to quit for good. Participants of Stoptober are not alone; they become a part of a supportive community that encourages them in every step.

International Stress Awareness Week 2022 takes place from Monday 7 November to Friday 11 November. It was created by the International Stress Management Association (ISMA) in 2018 to raise awareness about stress prevention.

Stress is a natural reaction to difficult situations in life, such as work, family, relationships and money problems. From these difficult situations we may often experience issues such as lack of motivation, restlessness, feeling overwhelmed and angry/frustrated.

Ways to help combat stress:

1) Recognise the route of your stress and, if possible, try to avoid it.
2) Connect with friends.
3) Partake in physical exercise. Which is scientifically proven to help with stress through the release of endorphins.
4) Have some 'me' time where you dedicate time to something you enjoy.
5) Try to avoid unhealthy habits. Try to limit the use of alcohol or smoking as this is known as 'avoidance behaviour' and wont help in the long run.

Hotlines for helping with stress or mental health issues:

SANEline - 0300 304 7000

The theme for the 2022 Black History Month is 'Time for Change: Action Not Words'.

'To get to a better tomorrow, we can’t just focus on the past. The past is in the past. We can acknowledge and learn from it, but to improve the future, we need action, not words. We need to come together around a shared common goal to achieve a better world for everyone'.

This years October Black History Month may well be up there with the most important to date. It is always fantastic and fascinating to celebrate the achievements and contributions of black members of society throughout past and present times, but this years theme takes a more hands on approach.

Being an ally means moving beyond the short-term gestures and focusing on real, long-term action. This includes the workplace, education system and the public sphere, implementing policies that achieve real outcomes. On an individual level, this means practice what you preach!

Autistic Pride Day is a celebration of the neurodiversity of people on the autism spectrum held on June 18, 2022. The day was first celebrated in 2005 by Aspies for Freedom and it quickly became a global event which is celebrated widely online and offline.

Autism is extremely difficult to provide a definition of as there is not one type of autism but many subtypes, influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Despite this difficulty in defining autism, the Autism Society defines it as ‘a complex, lifelong developmental disability that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person’s social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviours and is a “spectrum condition” that affects people differently and to varying degrees.’

The symbol used to represent autistic pride day is the rainbow-coloured infinity symbol with a gold background, which is often used by autistic advocates because the chemical symbol for gold is Au. The rainbow infinity symbol is used as it represents diversity with infinite variations and infinite possibilities.

Colourful uplifting parades with floats and celebrities, joyous festivals, workshops, picnics, and parties are among the principal components of LGBTQ Pride Month, also called Gay Pride, which is celebrated in June around the world.

Pride Month is celebrated every year in June, as this marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. These were a series of equal rights demonstrations held by members of the LGBTQ+ community against oppression, in response to violent police raids on LGBTQ+ establishments in New York in June 1969. Pride Month commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, and q***r community, as well as the accomplishments of LGBTQ individuals.

Unity Plus always has been, and continues to be, monumental supporters of the LGBTQ+ community and we wish you all a happy pride month.

International nurses’ day is observed around the world on 12 May, this date also coincides with the anniversary of Florence Nightingales birth. Each year the day is celebrated to mark the contributions that nurses make to society.

January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

The theme for the 2022 resource is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health.

Throughout the pandemic, nurses have made great sacrifices, acted courageously and recommitted daily to tackle a global health threat that is unprecedented in modern times, serving as an indispensable pillar supporting worldwide health care systems through some very challenging times. We most sincerely appreciate and celebrate all nurses and thank them for their unwavering dedication in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stress Awareness Month has been held every April since 1992 to raise awareness of the causes and solutions for our modern stress epidemic. The last two years have seen some of the most overwhelming periods of time we have faced and unfortunately with the rising cost of living issues revolving around stress are still profound.

This year’s theme is community, which was chosen because lack of support can cause loneliness and isolation, which in turn lowers people’s wellbeing, impacts mental health and can lead to mental illness. Social isolation is an important risk factor for both deteriorating mental health and su***de. As we emerge from the pandemic, it’s vital that the community support experienced by many people during this challenging time continues. Although restrictions have mainly been lifted, people need support now more than ever as they adjust to a new way of living.

Below are two links which we hope will help those who are struggling. The first two links contain advice on how to deal with the current rising cost of living. The third is a link to the Mind website, which contains three 24-hour helplines who are always open, anonymous and free to call.

The past year has been a difficult time for the entire adult social care workforce, and today sees the launch of the Social Care Day of Remembrance and Reflection dedicated to those working across the adult social care sector.

Despite the huge pressures during the pandemic everyone working across social care continued to show incredible skill and tenacity in supporting those who draw on social care across the UK. This day is an opportunity to remember all those in the workforce who made huge sacrifices to provide high quality care, including an estimated 922 social care workers in England tragically lost their lives between March 2020 and May 2021.
