Zoe Curtis Counselling Reg.MBACP

Zoe Curtis Counselling Reg.MBACP I run my counselling practice in Ivybridge at the Devon Family Hub. I also offer online and telephone counselling. I work with individuals aged 14+.

I am a fully qualified, insured counsellor registered with the BACP. I also have 10 years employment experience in mental health related fields, working within young people’s, adults, and elderly care settings, including individuals with learning difficulties. I work to help people process the past, manage the present, become more self aware, and find healthy ways to express emotions or cope with

stresses. Whether you want to make changes within your life, or make sense of your thoughts, relationships, or identity, I offer a safe, non judgemental and confidential space to explore this. I am an integrative counsellor which means I can draw on different approaches depending on the issue you bring and the way of working that suits you best. My training is based in person centred practice, along with CBT, psychodynamic, transactional analysis (TA), and mindfulness. I can also work creatively if this is something that would suit you. Seeking counselling can be daunting and I will do my best to make you feel at ease. It is important that your counsellor is the right ‘fit’ for you and that you feel comfortable. I offer an initial consultation at a reduced rate so that you can get a feel for me and decide if we would work well together. Feel free to pop me a message and I'll be happy to answer any questions. I've recently completed some training by Bessel Van Der Kolk, a dutch psychiatrist and author of The Body Keeps The Score. He talks about how trauma is carried in our nervous systems, and shows up in relationships, and the way we respond to stress. He teaches that healing isn't only about telling the story, it's about helping the body feel safe again.

The below post made me think of this in relation to anger; how we all get different messages about anger growing up; whether it's safe - to feel, express, and witness. These messages get written into our views of ourselves, others, and the world, and we behave and react according to these messages. Sometimes this can be self sabotaging. But it can also be challenged, and rewritten.

On the other side of trauma, chronic stress or deep contraction, the body doesn’t always need more calming, soothing and relaxing — it often need expression, movement, and aliveness.

We’ve become a culture of disconnection. And in our healing, it can feel like we’ve been isolated to just…. Healing. But what happened to living? What about play? What about dance? What about creativity?

These are medicines that we often forget to integrate into our journey too.

What I’ve found so often is that many of us are seeking. We’re looking for something outside of us to heal. We’re trying to find answer, we’re trying to find purpose, we’re trying to find resolution. But underneath that? There’s a craving to feel alive again.

To feel connected and engaged and turned on by life without overwhelm but energy. That’s potent.

Yes we need to regulate, yes we need to learn to process, and yes we very often need containment and settling…. But above all we need expression, connection, and moments of feeling alive again. This expands our nervous system for more life.

So please remember that no matter where you are on your journey, aliveness is not something you have to wait for. It can come in the quiet moments of dancing in your kitchen while cooking dinner. Or turning up the radio while driving with the windows down. Or spending time in nature. Or playing with your kids. Or doing something creative. What gives you a sense of aliveness? What brings you back into connection? What lights you up? Turn towards it 🫶🏼

✨️Telephone counselling✨️ offers a calm, supportive space to talk from wherever you feel most comfortable. Many people find it easier to open up when they’re not being seen, allowing conversations to feel more natural and less pressured. Without the need to travel or use video, sessions can fit more easily around daily life, whether you’re at home, on a walk, or taking a quiet moment just for yourself. The focus is simply on your voice, your experience, and being heard with care.

My inner critic loves to present random things as factual evidence. It’s exhausting, and tiring, and so freaking annoying. Just because I feel like I messed up everything doesn't mean I actually did. So, when my brain starts getting a little too dramatic, I try to question it. Here are some questions that help!
