We're called Raptortech....... but why?
Setting up a business can be daunting. I’m not talking about the work you do when you start trading and the well documented highs and lows that most business owners go through in their first two years – sure the idea of that is pretty scary, but I mean the work that happens before you can even open your doors for business – filling out government documents, VAT registration, creating legal contracts, software licensing etc.
I didn’t know where to start, I’m a great recruiter but have no experience of these things. Fortunately, once I kicked off the process (with some great support from SSG), I really had nothing to worry about. In the fact the most difficult part of the set-up experience was picking my name.
I’d dreamed of having my own company for years and had a name in mind which I thought was the right balance of cool yet professional, had a clever play on words and sent a message to the market that was so strong my business surely couldn’t fail!!! Turns out I was right; it was a great name for a recruiting business and someone had already registered it at companies house.
What followed was a painful four weeks of googling words, asking friends and searching for inspiration for a name that I was able to register and, more importantly, felt authentic.
I couldn’t even follow the traditional naming formula of Surname + Recruitment Services = Name as Arnold Recruitment Services, or ARS for short, didn't promote the image I wanted (although I did quite like some of the marketing opportunities…..)
In the end I decided on RaptorTech and although it wasn’t my first choice, I love it. I could tell you I picked it for the Latin connotations of the word Raptor which means “to seize”. This would make sense, however is just happy coincidence.
In fact, it all came back to a memory I had as a 6-year-old. At this age I was obsessed by dinosaurs, even going so far as to precociously tell Mrs Geeden at school that I was destined to be a Palaeontologist. I might not have achieved that ambition (because…..well…… Science) but I’m still a massive Dino-Nerd and I think RaptorTech represents that nicely – I’m also sure six year old Simon would approve.
I know it’s only a name, but it’s part of my new businesses journey and I am proud to own it.
