Two weeks on from its launch, I think it's time to look at the new Jaguar Type 01 with fresh eyes.
Seeing it away from the display stage and out in the real world has only strengthened my view.
I absolutely love it. It looks fantastic.
There has been plenty of debate about Jaguar's new direction and comparisons with its iconic past. But Jaguar has never been at its best when playing safe. From the E-Type to the XJ, it has always challenged convention and made people stop and look.
Is the Type 01 a tribute to the XJ? No. And perhaps that's exactly the point.
Rather than recreate the past, Jaguar has created something distinctive for a new era. Dramatic proportions, real presence and some seriously impressive engineering make this far more than a styling exercise.
For me, it comes back to three words Jaguar has lived by for generations: Grace, Space and Pace.
Grace in its design, space in its grand touring proportions, and pace in its performance and engineering ambition. The ingredients are still there — simply reinterpreted for a different era.
Of course, the real test will be the finished customer cars, the ownership experience and commercial success. But I'm optimistic.
My prediction? I think it will sell very well.
Not everyone will love it, but it gives people something genuinely different to aspire to. In a market where so many cars look increasingly similar, that individuality matters.
Sometimes the best way to respect a great heritage is not to keep looking backwards, but to have the confidence to move forwards.
Jaguar has made its statement. I'm looking forward to seeing these cars on our roads.
Grace. Space. Pace. A new chapter for Jaguar.
What do you think? Is the Type 01 the bold reinvention Jaguar needs, or should the brand draw more heavily on its iconic past?
