Ever wondered what’s behind a door you’ve walked past a hundred times? 🤔 Heritage Open Days begin this weekend, England's largest festival of history and culture. These open days give us the chance to step inside historic buildings and discover places that aren’t normally open to the public, as well as learn a little more about the stories behind some familiar local landmarks.

And for anyone with an interest in buildings (which, unsurprisingly, includes quite a few of us here at Howe Chartered Surveyors! 😆), it’s a particularly good excuse to look a little closer.

From centuries-old construction methods and original architectural details to the way buildings have been adapted and been added to over the years, older properties have plenty to tell us about how our towns and communities have evolved.

They also come with their own challenges, of course. Looking after our built heritage means finding the right balance between preserving what makes a building special and ensuring it can continue to be safely and practically used for generations to come.

So, with hundreds of interesting buildings and spaces opening their doors across the country, we’d love to know: is there anywhere you’re planning to visit during Heritage Open Days this year? 🏛️ Let us know in the comments below! 👇

How green is your building? 🌱 It’s World Green Building Week, and this year’s theme, , is all about making sure the buildings we use today are ready for the challenges of tomorrow.

But what does a ‘green building’ actually mean in practice? 💚

It doesn’t necessarily mean starting again with a brand-new, ultra-modern building. Often, some of the biggest improvements can be made to the buildings we already have, through better insulation, more efficient heating and cooling, renewable energy, smarter technology and thoughtful refurbishment.

And there are practical benefits too. More efficient buildings can use less energy and cost less to run, while improving resilience to changing temperatures and weather can help protect buildings, their occupants and their long-term value. 💡

It’s something we think about in our own business too. At Howe Chartered Surveyors, we’re proud of the steps we’ve taken to reduce our environmental impact and we’re always looking at where we can do better.

Of course, buildings are our business, so we also have an opportunity to look beyond our own four walls. Whether we’re surveying an existing property, advising on refurbishment or designing something new, considering how a building can perform better for the years ahead is becoming an increasingly important part of the conversation.

Greener buildings aren’t just about ticking an environmental box; they’re about creating buildings that work better now, and are better prepared for whatever comes next. 🌍

September always brings with it a bit of a ‘back to business’ feeling. And for many businesses, it’s a good time to take stock of not just how they’re working, but where they’re working too.

Does your current premises still suit the business you are today? Perhaps you’ve grown and space is becoming tight? Maybe you’re paying for more room than you realistically need, the location no longer works for your team or customers, or the layout simply doesn’t reflect the way you work anymore?

Of course, moving isn’t always the answer. Sometimes a rethink of the space you already have, whether through refurbishment or reconfiguration, can make an existing building work much harder.

And if the time really has come for something new, finding the right commercial property is about much more than square footage. Location, condition, future plans and the potential of the building itself all need to be considered.

With commercial property agency, surveying and architectural and interior design all sitting alongside one another at Howe Chartered Surveyors, we can help you look at the options and decide what makes sense for your business – both now and for the years ahead.

If September has you rethinking your workspace, perhaps it’s time to find out Howe we can help:

With the change of season, September is a good month for a property health check. After the summer months and before autumn weather really sets in, it’s worth taking a little time to look at the condition of your property and pick up on anything that might need attention. 🏡

That doesn’t necessarily mean anything complicated; check gutters and downpipes are clear, look for slipped or damaged roof tiles, keep an eye out for cracks that may have changed over the summer, and check windows, external brickwork and pointing for any obvious signs of deterioration.

Inside, look out for early signs of damp or water ingress, particularly around windows, ceilings and external walls. And if you manage a commercial property, September is also a sensible time to review planned maintenance and deal with outstanding repairs before winter.

Small defects have a habit of becoming bigger ones once wind, rain and colder temperatures arrive, so catching them early can often save time and expense further down the line. And, of course, if something doesn’t look quite right or you’d prefer a professional opinion, we know Howe to help.

September already! 🍂 As summer draws to a close and we head towards the final quarter of the year, it’s often a time when property plans start moving up the to-do list again.

All of this, and our usual surveying services are still going strong, too!

So, whatever is sitting on your property to-do list as we head into the last few months of 2026, it might be time to get things moving. From surveying and commercial property to architecture and design, we know Howe to help.

Regeneration and redevelopment continue to drive construction activity, with brownfield sites, redundant commercial buildings and previously developed land offering opportunities to create something that works better for the way we live and work today.

But making the most of an existing site isn't always straightforward. Constraints around the existing buildings, neighbouring properties, access, planning and the site's previous use can all influence what is possible.

That's where good architectural design comes into its own. By understanding a site's limitations as well as its potential, architects can explore how existing buildings might be adapted, extended or repurposed, or how previously developed land could accommodate something entirely new.

And with architectural design sitting alongside our traditional surveying expertise at Howe Chartered Surveyors, we can look at a property from more than one perspective.

Regeneration isn't simply about building more; it's also about making better use of what we already have – and we know Howe to help with that. Get in contact via the details below:

Small property problems have a habit of becoming bigger ones when they’re left too long. 🏠

A small crack can allow water in, eventually leading to timber decay. Loose flashing might seem like a minor roof repair, until bad weather turns it into something more substantial. And a blocked gutter can quickly result in overflowing water and damp making its way inside.

The trouble is, these things are often easy to overlook - particularly when everything inside the property appears perfectly fine.

Regular inspections and dealing with maintenance as it arises can help prevent relatively straightforward repairs becoming much larger, and more expensive, projects further down the line.

Whether you own a home, commercial property or manage a wider portfolio, keeping on top of the condition of your building(s) really does pay.

Good architecture is shaped by experience, and for us that experience stretches well beyond one type of building, project or location. 🏡

At HCS Architecture & Interiors, our architectural expertise spans a wide range of sectors and settings, from prime residential projects to heritage and listed buildings, as well as more complex schemes involving multiple stakeholders and competing requirements.

Much of this experience has been gained across Central London and the South East, working with properties where careful design, technical understanding and an appreciation of the existing building all need to come together. However, it also extends further afield too, with projects completed across Scotland, Ireland, France and Switzerland, bringing experience of different buildings, settings and design challenges into the work we do today.

Therefore, whether it’s sensitively adapting a listed property, rethinking a high-end home or navigating a more complex project with multiple parties involved, that breadth of experience helps us look at each building individually, understanding what’s there, what’s possible and how best to move it forward.
